I bought a 3.5″ Britannia project years ago, which included this casting, which clearly doesn’t belong. Going by the width I’d say it is for a 5″ gauge design, obviously a combined frame stretcher and water pump. Question is, what for?LPIC9820LPIC9821

Strange to see that none of the ‘proper’ Model Engineers on this forum has responded to Phil.

I suppose they must all be busy whinging about those of us with other interests.

Or more likely what I said, they have moved on to where Proper model engineering is still the core subject of the forum/group.

Sorry not a loco man so can’t help on this one although I was the only one to post on the other recent thread asking what castings were.

Do you have any contact with the seller, who may be able to tell you?

It might just have been for another locomotive he’d started building, sold unfinished and forgot to pack this casting with the rest.

The problem with enquiries like this, apart from risking rather sour responses, is the object is likely to be identifiable to species level only by somebody who has used an identical one.

The only other way I can suggest is trawling through the Reeves on-line catalogue to see if it appears there; but with 62 different 5″ gauge locos listed, good luck with that one! The shape suggests outside cylinders and valve-gear, which might narrow the search a bit.

Or perhaps send the photo to Reeves and Blackgates to see if they can identify it.

Is there not a process where you can identify things from photos, I think it is. Not sure what the process is, possibly reverse photo ID

I tried ‘Google Lens’ and it failed fairly miserably.

I don’t know that search software but wouldn’t it depend on someone having placed a copy of that photograph somewhere Google can find it in the first place? Which doesn’t seem very likely for something like this.

If only this ridiculous forum had displayed the screenshot that I posted … you would have seen the results of google’s attempt at finding similar images.
