      Hi,

Someone referred me to the range of archive articles available from MyHobbystore here:

A couple that interest me are construction of (a) the Stent tool & cutter grinder and (b) the V Archibald ML10 gearbox.

The prices seem very reasonable given that these projects ranged over many issues. Has anyone used this service covering multi-part projects? If so, can you comment on the quality of reproduction generally, and of drawings/photos in particular, please?

      Thanks

      Joe

Hi, If the ME archive is anything like the MEW then it is not worth subscribing. Although I have an almost complete set of MEW, I took out a subscription for the archive only to find that the format offered changed and is almost useless for taking off prints. It has however, allowed me to scan through the editions and note the articles of interest. I did this with ME many years ago when the home photocopier became available and I copied all the articles on workshop projects, putting them into 3 ring binders. These make interesting reading during the Winter when it is too cold for the workshop. I now intend doing the same with MEW articles but it would have been easier to print off direct from the archive. I think the subscription  is a waste of £29.

            Thanks for the comment.

Judging by the ‘views’ and no further comments, it looks as though not many have tried this particular  service. Guess I’ll have to give it a try.

              Hello Joe

I’ve just ordered the Stent info, if you want to hold on a bit, I’ll be happy to let you know how I find it.

I didn’t realise that these articles were available until I saw your original post about it – many thanks for the link. Looking at the MyHobbyStore the links to the archived articles isn’t immediately apparent (to me anyway), perhaps the website management could make it more prominent.

By the way Ray – this archive that Joe asked about is a separate entity to one that everyone is complaining about.

              Keith

Thanks Keith. I’d already ordered the ML10 gearbox article by the time I saw your post. Ordered Sunday, item despatched today according to email received so that looks encouraging. Perhaps we can compare notes in due course.

Thought I’d report back on my experience.

First, I ordered the ML10 gearbox article copies on Sunday and received them on Wednesday so full marks to MyHobbyStore for speed of service. As regards the article(s), though, the picture is more mixed. The full set comes on 13 A3 pages, pages printed side by side, and of these, 8 were well reproduced, text, photos and drawings being very clear. Of the remainder, 4 pages were rather faint but text could read with some difficulty and I ought to be able to recover all drawing detail by rescanning, enlarging and editing in a drawing program. The final page, however, was unsatisfactory, with text being decipherable but 2 (non-critical) drawings having pretty much disappeared.

To be fair, for a medium-complexity project like this, I don’t think the reproduced drawings in the magazine were ever intended to be full working drawings. Indeed, the articles state that full drawings are available from NS & A Hemingway. On reflection, I think anyone contemplating a project of this complexity (or greater complexity, like a loco) would have to buy a pukka set of drawings anyway.

As a useful description of of the scope of the project, the article offers pretty fair value for money.

I can second Joe’s comments. Firstly the delivery of the article I ordered (Stent grinder) was exactly the same as Joe’s – ordered Sunday, received Wednesday.

In the Stent article it says quite specifically that the drawings are reproduced with permission from Blackgates, and that some dimensions have been removed, although all those needed to make sense of the article are there. That seems reasonable to me, as the article is about how one person machined the commercial castings to build the grinder NOT “this is how to build one starting from scratch”.

The quality of the reproduction is more than acceptable, all the text is readable and the drawings by and large are fine. I suspect that they were probably only slightly better in the original article and again they are NOT meant as working drawings but to help expalin the set ups and machining process being described. The photographs have come out clearly, both black and white and colour.

Again I’d agree with Joe, as a descripton of what you’d be letting yourself in for it is absolutely fine – as was the original article. The alternative for me would have been to source about 6 or 7 back isssues of ME from the early 1990’s which would have cost considerably more than the £10 plus postage that I paid for these. Good value for money.

                    Keith
