I have a ML7, I would like a gearbox for screw cutting, what should I do, keep my ML7 and fit a gearbox that would cost around £600 or buy a S7 which as got a gearbox fitted and sell my ML7. Or should I be looking at other options.

          Hi Ron
Get the Super 7 . The bearings are better than the ML7

            I agree.

Clean your ML to within an inch of it's like, maybe a lick of paint and get it on ebay.

I agree. It's not just the bearings (impportant though they are). The S7 has:

              Better tailstock
              Leadscrew handwheel
              Longer cross-slide
              Vastly improved topslide mounting
              Countershaft clutch

….and probably other things I've forgotten. The ML7R has some, but not all, of these improvements. As for gearboxes, I have the impression (though I've not done a careful check) that the difference in price between S7 and S7B is less than the cost of an add-on gearbox. I certainly wouldn't want to go back to achangewheel machine again, even though you do occasionally have to use changewheels for unusual jobs.

                No contest Ron

If you can afford it go for the S7. It's not just for screwcutting but also for a good range of fine feeds and, depending on the model, power cross feeds too. Despite the ritual " bad mouthing" of Myford by some on this site I'm very pleased with mine, it fulfills all my requirements and is always a pleasure to use. Yes it has its limitations re spindle bore etc. but I like to make small things so I don't find myself limited here and the build quality and accuracy is good. I've been through ML4, ML 10 to Super 7B and the accessories from each have moved with me.

                Regards

                Norman

Tailstock and crossslide have rules and pointers attached for a start, and a saddle stop.

I wish I went for the s7 or even the 7crying 2 But that was my own fault for not doing my homework as I though everything was interchangeable between the range ,but that's not so with the ml4 and not a lot of people seem to know or do a lot with the old ml4 .
