        Hello;

Can someone let me know out there what is the correct size of the myford T slot on the cross slide and vertical slide and also what is the correct cutter to use to replicate said T slots.

I want to make a cross slide attachment to take my vertical slide.

        Thanks

        Ralph

And 61 seconds reveals 2 different sizes qouted in other articles. So what I am after is the correct and complete dimensions not just width.

Plus what is the suitable cutter.

                Width :

                Basic slot 3/8 .

                Lower slot 5/8 .

                Height :

                Upper slot 7/32 .

                Lower slot 5/32 .

                All in inches .

There never seems to have been any formal tolerance system but roughly speaking T slot is dimensioned for a loose fit on nominal size T bolt and T bolts themselves are made undersize .

Many detail variations can be found on actual measured dimensions of slots and bolts .

At least one lathe has been found with dimensions of slot which measure 10 – 16 – 6 – 4 mm

T slot dimensions originated from an available Woodruff cutter many years ago These cutters are still available from several sources – try Hemmingway , Tracy Tools and RDG .

Text editor stopped working last night when I was tidying up above post and then would not let me back to edit .

Corrections : Lower slot is actually specified as 9/16 inch min but in practice some are wider up to 5/8 inch.

All cutters ever seen cut a little wide anyway when new .

Suggest you take 9/16 inch as the proper working dimension .

All other information in above post seems to be correct .

Proper T Slot cutters have a cutting face, top and bottom as well as periphery. You can use woodruff key cutters ( I have, for Myford sized slots), very carefully. Try also Sussex Tools, if not a stock item they can obtain from UK manufacturers.

That would make it 3/8 sloting cutter first then 5/8 * 5/32 Woodruff cutter
