Myford Super 7 tool post

Hello.

I am pretty new to using a lathe but have a nice Myford Super 7 which is working really well. I wanted to fit either a 4 way toolpost or a quick change toolpost but have run into a small problem

I bought a genuine Myford 1410 4 way toolpost which fits on the lathe nicely. However, when fitting my 10mm cutters I found the tips are 2mm above the work centre line. The thickness of the base of the toolpost where the tool will fit in to is 0.346".

I had assumed that the toolposts would fit any Myford so are these only OK for 8mm tooling?

I would be grateful for any pointers on the right quick change or 4 way toolpost to purchase.

I'm not a Myford owner, but my lathe was equipped with a four-way toolpost when I picked it up. I very soon got fed up with all the jiggery-pokery needed to get tools properly aligned and quickly obtained a QCTP. Probably one of the best accessories I've bought for the lathe. I'd recommend one every time. Get lots of tool holders though, or be prepared to make your own. They aren't that difficult – I even incorporated one in my knurling tool, just 'cause I had a bit of metal the right size. (Photo in my album "Normandy Workshop".)

Hi Richard

Get yourself a QCTP they're well worth the expense; either a Dickson type or a Axa type. I changed from the supplied 4 way as soon as I got my WM250 & have not regretted it. I believe for Dickson type you should go for the '0' or '00' size as I'm sure either will fit, Myford owners will no doubt put you right The Axa type would be either a 100 or 200 size, again Myford / Boxford owners will confirm. You will no doubt need numerous holders for either type; I have 18.. so far, & still look to change out tools on occasion so some more will be on the shopping list for the Harrogate MExh.

The Myford 1410 4-way toolpost  (Myford called it a four tool turret)  won't hold anything over 8mm at centre height. They will fit any 7-seriues lathe, but with that caveat.

To quote the original advertising -"It is designed for use with 5/16" square tools or cutter blanks".

My 4-way has one of the slots enlarged on the bottom side to take bigger tools, but these days I only use a QCTP as recommended by John for day to day. Sometimes if I have an old big tool I revert to the old "elephant's foot" toolholder.

The 4-way is an ideal tool for stabbing yourself in the back of the hand with the unused mounted tooling!

Thank you all for such quick replies. I only joined the Forum today and it is a mine of information.

From what has been said I will now be on the search for a good QCTP set, will I really need 18 tool holders??!!

I love your comment Phil re getting stabbed in the back of the hand, probably exactly what I would do. Your point regarding the original advertising certainly answers my main question.

I suppose now my follow up question is will all QCTP's accept 10mm tooling or might I face a similar issue on height?

I have a Dickson toolpost and 10mm tools are fine, you will probably accumulate toolholders over time but three or four is a usful start, it is not the end of the world to have swap and set a rarely used tool and still easier than using packing strips, I have only got up to 14 holders so far. If you use the home page search box to find quick change toolposts for myford a wealth of opinion and information will turn up in other threads on this site.

Richard, My advice would be buy an A & R Precision QCTP Dickson type, they are superior to the imported ones and equal in my opinion to the originals. They are more expensive but it WILL pay dividends in the long term.

I have two original Myford/Dickson ones UK made and the A & r tool holders fit as they should, I have bought imported ones as well over the years which are OK but! the but is that you usually have to do some work to make them fit properly.

If you're concerned about the amount of tool holders, don't be, I already had quite a few from my previous machine so have only bought about 6 over the last couple of years, I have since bought a Tangential tool holder 18 mo. ago & most of my tool holders are now sat on the shelf as I use the Tangy 95% of the time. Most of the others are set up with 'Pusher'(bearing) tool, chamfering tools, DTI set up, profile tool, knurling tool, parting tools etc.
