      Hello,

I'm currently in a transition between using a Boxford and Myford. I want to sell on the Boxford to make room and funds for something bigger. There's a job I do about once a month that will not fit in the Myford so I was thinking about adding a riser block between the bed and headstock. Has anyone done this already? I guess the only issue is the gears down to the gearbox and would probably need to fit larger sizes within the same ratio to keep the correct feeds?

      Thanks for any opinions,

      Chris

It's fairly straightforward to fit riser blocks but not a quick job because you have to dismantle the headstock. If it's only an inch or two, risers could probably be left in position. If you replace the standard banjo (which does not allow adjustment of the gear spacing) you should be able to replace the idler gear with either a larger gear or pair of gears. This will not affect the final ratio but may affect the direction of rotation, not a problem because you can correct this with the tumbler reverse lever. Myfords made a banjo with adjustable gear centres for use with their metric conversion set, depending on how much height you need to get, this may do. Otherwise you will probably need to make an adaptor or special banjo.

The usual way of doing this on a Myford is to fit a taller headstock in front of the existing one, driven by either a belt or gears from the spindle. This avoids problems with the gears and is readily fitted and removed as required. I believe one or two versions were commercially produced.

Thanks Dave, I figured it must be doable, but was surprised I could find no mention of it anywhere. I had a look tonight I think other than the gears it's just the gear cover that wouldn't fit but that possibly could be cut and tig welded to stretch it to suit.

If you go to the Myford.co.uk website, then click on archives 11 in the left hand menu, there is a photo which may interest you.

it's reference 1394 about third one up from the bottom.

Sorry this is very convoluted, but I am having trouble posting links etc tonight.

There was a Myford headstock riser advertised on here and on Homeworkshop recently. Although for the ML10 it was said to be easily modified to fit 7 series.

I believe it is now sold, but the advertiser email was martin(at)heli-world.co.uk. Obviously swap the "at" for ampersand.

Maybe he would be willing to help – may still have some pics.
