I have an early S7 with an early mk1 clutch, when disengaging the clutch it drags and the chuck carries on rotating although it can be stopped by hand.

I have adjusted the clutch several times by the Allan screw located under the locking screw (situated in belt pulley)

If I spray a brake type cleaner into the clutch and then blow it out with compressed air the clutch disengages but soon goes back to dragging.

So any advice on how I could get it to work correctly?

I believe this type of clutch is metal on metal and does not have friction brake shoes as in later clutches.

So should this early type clutch be lubricated although the only way I can see would be to spray some lubrication into the clutch although I think this would probably make it drag again.s7 clutch pulley.jpg

If you have a Facebook account, join the Myford Lathes group, where you will find a useful pdf in the Files section there.
Failing that, send me a PM with an email address, and I'll let you have a copy.
I don't wish to try posting it here in case anyone becomes concerned about copyright issues.

I have the same early S7 as you but I have not have this problem. As you suspect the friction faces are cast iron and nothing is mentioned about lubrication in the owner's maual and I've never bothered. I had it all apart some years ago in order to replace the needle bearings (which getting rather noisy) with oilite bushes. Only suggestion I would make is you check that the cast iron clutch ring has not been distorted at some stage so that it rubs even with no pressure from the adjusting wedge. I can offer scans of the relevant pages of the owner's manual if you don't have them already. If this of is of interest please PM me with an email address.

Thanks for the reply Bill, I do have those PDF files which show the layout and how to adjust the clutch which I have done several times but it has not really helped. Rgds Brian.

Thanks Chris, I’m not sure if I have the pages although I do have some info as per the PDF files referred to in the previous posts, I would be grateful if you could send me what you have, I will pm you my email.

I don’t think I can check the cast iron ring without stripping it down can I ?

I did not really want to strip it as I have just been through a major gearbox strip and repair. Rgds Brian.
