Hi Folk,

 

Can anybody throw any light on how a ML7-R lathe purchased in 1984 as brand new from Buck & Hickman  came to have a 1/3 HP split phase motor fitted whereas the handbook states 1/2 HP three phase or 3/4 HP single phase (capacitor start)

The colleague I purchased this lathe was never aware of this and it has performed tirelessly since 1984.

I wasn’t even aware that Myford produced  a 1/3 HP motor.

 

I’d put some images on of the motor and  plate on this thread but I haven’t cracked the system yet.

Hi Len,

              To put photo’s into a post you first have to load them to the ” My Photos” section of the website. To do this under “My Account” (Near top left of this web page.) click on “My Photos” and copy the pictures there. When the pictures are there you can use the “Insert image” button. This is the one to the left of the “You Tube” button in the blue area at the top of the “Post a reply” box  This caught  me out the first time as all the other forums I have used just allowed inserting a picture into the post. You could try this website for information. Lathes website  If it is not giving you any problem I would leave it as it is.

It was starting to give problems Les.

I’d completed a few jobs with it until one day recentIy switched on and It started smoking, something’s not quite right I thought .

I changed to the lower speed range and it performed OK.  I still felt uneasy so I stripped the motor down to look for evidence of start windings being overloaded but nothing was  visible.

Anyway I had a spare 3/4HP Brookes motor lying around as one does and I put that back on.

The lathe goes like a bomb now (not a smoke bomb I might add) throughout the complete speed range.

Hi Len,

                When the motor was smoking did it rotate?  If it did not rotate then the capacitor may have gone low in value or have increased ESR (Effective series resistance.) If it did not start then the current through the winding connected directly across  the mains would be very high which could have caused the smoke. It may be worth trying a new capacitor (I will not call it a start capacitor as it is connected all the time in a split phase motor.) before scraping the motor or having it rewound.

I believe the ML10 was originally fitted with a 1/3 HP motor  but this was upgraded to 1/2 HP for the Speed 10.

I honestly couldn’t remember if it was rotating before I switched off all I know was that when I removed the drive belt it went well.

 

Incidentally this type of split phase motor doesn’t have a start
capacitor, this is what threw me when I first stripped the motor down.
It’s the centrifugal switch that disconnects the start winding once up
to speed as normal.

Hi Len,

              What I was thinking of as a split phase motor was wrong. I was thinking it was the type of motor that has  capacitor that is permanently connected. Sorry for error.

Len, My ML7 bought new from the factory in 1969 was supplied with a 1/3 HP motor as standard, it was later they upped them to 1/2 HP.

 

It ran for years like that until I fitted a two speed 3 phase motor.
