could anyone help with the setup of the change gears for a myford ML2. I’ve just been given one, unfortunatley the previous owner had removed all the gears for cleaning, and I am unable to figure out where they all go.If anyone has drawings or photos they could let me have it would be very much appreciated

I believe the gears supplied with your ML2 were 20, 20, -65 by 5s plus one 38t gears. If you fit a 65T gear to lead screw , then on lower stud fit 20T gear to mesh with theabove 65T gear. Then fit 60T gear to the 20T gear to make up first compound gear .(i.e.20T & 60T are keyed together) Then on 2nd Stud fit 20T & 55T to make up 2nd compound gear ,the 20T meshing with the 60T. Adjust the quadrant so as the 55T meshes with smallest gear you you have for spindle. If direction of saddle is wrong adjust tumbler reverse. If no tumbler reverse is available fit idler into slot provided on head stock. The above will give you a feed of .006”/ rev .If you have a 75 &70 substitute for 55 & 60 and you will obtain a feed of .004”/rev. A friend who is ill @ the moment has photo copy of the ML1,2,3 & 4 lathe manual which I will borrow to loan to you. Hope the above helps if not let me know your difficulty and Iwill try and help. Yours Alex Fairbairn. PS if you require further help a list of the gears you have plus if they are the original with pins or the later version with keyway in thebore would be helpful. AF.

Are they not all interchangeable? Even the main spindle.
Thus making 65,000 combinations for screwcutting etc kinda thing.

I have some ml7 pictures you may find useful, I will put them in my album.

              Dear David,

Two photos of ML2 above. These show gear train for 0.006 or 0.004 feed per rev. The large wheel from lower compound gear has been removed to allow you to see the setup. Please let me know how you are progressing.

Just a quick note you can use ML7 gears on an ML2 . Cant remember whether you may have to file a new keyway though!

                  ML7 gears have a 1/8″ keyway.
ML2 and ML4 gears have a hole to take a dowel.

Both are interchangeable with one another provided you drill the hole or cut a keyway.
There are a few out there that have both, probably during the transition period.

                      Hello Alexander
many thanks for the photos they were a great help, as you can see I’ve managed to upload a couple of my own photos, you will notice my ML2 is fitted with a forward/reverse tumbler so I assume that as the fixed gear (1) on the mandrel and the one below the tumbler (3) are both identical in effect gear (4) becomes the first gear in the chain also I think there is also a stud missing on which to fit a second compound gear. the gears I have are as you sugested with the dowel rather than the key,as regards to your friends manual it looks different to mine so a copy would be useful
                      regards David
