This question may have been asked before but I have missed it, is it possible to convert a Metric Myford gear box to Imperial , if the answer is yes, how do I do it ? . Thanks .

          Hello Kenneth,

I didn't know Myford ever made a Metric gearbox, if so I at least would love to know the details; I have a real interst in their gearboxes.

          Anticipating some really new information

          regards

          Brian

I'm fairly sure the Myford 7 series gearboxes were all Imperial, they sold a metric conversion set which was a banjo with adjustable gear centres together with a few gears, this fitted between the tumbler gear and gearbox input in place of the fixed centres banjo. 280 and 254 lathes may have had a different arrangement. The selector arm detent positions in Norton type gearboxes are fixed, it would be quite difficult to alter the ratios, probably easier to make a new gearbox.

              Sorry Brian, no new information!

Kenneth, there was only one sort of gearbox, changes from Imperial to Metric threads was done by use of external changewheels on the banjo arm.

As Daveb says, there was a complete Metric conversion set available, which included a different banjo arm to hold the changewheels. This was used in conjunction with a conversion chart.

So to "convert" the gearbox, you alter the changewheels feeding the drive to it.

I'd be interested in seeing a pdf or scan of anything related to the Myford gearbox like the manual or something similar. Does anyone know of a link?

                    Hello Kenneth and Chris

If you are looking instead to convert Imperial to Metric pitch generating on a Myford gearbox equipped lathe, I can offer alternatives to buying the Myford metric conversion set which offers some advantages and retains the full use of the fine feed, a feature that is lost with the conversion banjo in place.

If you would like more information send me a PM

                    Regards

                    Brian
