        Hi al

I have a Myford super 7 lathe ,imperial version. On the top slide the marking ring turns with the hand wheel as it should . But on the cross-slide the marking ring almost spins freely, which means I cannot use it for measuring how much I am turning off. Is there some sort of clutch mechanism , if so how can I tighten it up.

Or does something need replacing. Thanks in advance for any help.

        Mike

Probably the diaphragm washer is missing. **LINK** Niko.

A further tip: if the diaphragm washer does not apply enough friction to the dial you can hold it on edge and tap with a soft hammer to put a bit more set into it.

As above. Yes it sounds like the spring washer is missing or broken. Remove the slotted screw in the centre of the handwheel & it will come off.

              Steve.

I took the handle of and the spring was in place and seemed in good condition. It was all very dirty though with lots of swarf mainly brass. I gave it all a good clean and now it is working fine. Must of been all the muck stopping it getting enough grip. If I have any more trouble I will order another spring. Thanks for all your advice.

                Cheers Mike
