I already have a set of genuine Myford imperial collets for my ML7R and I’m now on the lookout for a set of metric collets for the same lathe.

I would appreciate any recommendations for which collets and chuck to go for bearing in mind that the prices for the genuine Myford ones are astronomical although nice to have.

Are there systems out there that use the Myford spindle nose thread?

          Hi Len

There sure are try Chronos and look for :-

“Soba Collet Chuck to suit Myford with 15 Vertex Collets ref ERM125”

I have these and they are very good in fact I prefer them to the Myford ones.

(I tried to link directly to the item but it didn’t work )

          Regards

Thanks Norman, have they through holes the same as stock diameter?

              Hi Len

Yes they do. Each collet holds over a 1mm range so, for example, the 16mm holds all sizes between 15mm & 16 mm, 10mm all sizes between 10mm & 9 mm etc. etc. so the set can hold all sizes between 1mm and 16mm. I guess this could make your Imperial set redundant and you might be able to raise some cash on ebay but, no doubt, someone will tell us if ditching the Myford set is a good idea ! I do have a few Myford collets myself so an opinion from one of our expert members would be useful!
You can, of course, buy just the collet chuck for the Myford nose piece then just add those collets as you require them.
An additional benefit of the ER system is that, with a suitable chuck, you can also use them on the mill

I might just do that Norman.

I have a 2MT nose adaptor for my rotary tables that will let me use them on the mill.

Incidentally, I was also going to make the 5C style square and hex holders for indexing milling cutters for regrinding the cutting teeth only.
This would have the Myford nose thread and would be bored out to take a shortened ARC-EURO 1″ O.D. sleeve with a 2MT bore.
In fact that would take the imperial collets as well.

                It’s looking good Norman.

I’m all tooled up with ER25 collets and chucks for both the Myford and my mill and very useful they’ve been too. However, I’ve recently obtained some ER32 chucks and collets. These handle sizes from 2mm to 20mm and I suspect it’s going to pretty much replace my ER25 gear.

At any rate, you might want to consider this as an alternative to ER25 in the light of your own requirements.

What sort of T.I.R. did you get with those ER25 collets.

Merry Miller, when I lived in the U.K. I used to poke around in the used tool shops, where I would often find odd (often part sets) of collets often ‘going for a song’. I made a gauge which allowed me to set the compound slide to a No 2 MT. Once you can do that easily you can make all the accurate collets holders you will ever want.

What sort of T.I.R. did you get with those ER25 collets.
I bought a 2MT ER25 collet chuck & a set of collets from Ebay seller “onlineseller68” in Hong Kong. The collets came in blue & yellow boxes similar to those that Arc Eurotrade supply. Delivery was a couple of weeks. I can’t recall the total price now, but IIRC it was less than half the price quoted by the UK retailers.
I checked runout in my Super 7 spindle on a 10mm carbide endmill held in the appropriate collet – runout measured on the tool shank close to the chuck was the same as I measure on the front of the taper in the spindle nose at around 0.0002″ TIR

That is close enough for my requirements !

That would just about be good enough for me Nigel.

                            Hi Len

Well now you’ve got me out into the workshop!
I’ve not checked before but when I put a 1/2″ end mill into a 13 – 12mm collet I find that the runout is better than 0.0005″ – I don’t think my equipment (including my eyesight!) can resolve accurately below that!
Quite good enough for my rough efforts anyway!

                            Regards

Using myford coolets the saddle tends to be over the gap in the bed which i do not like
,i have a few myford collets but i changed to using Er collets with Arrand holder ,Arrand not cheap but the quality is top notch akin to myfords quality, when buying Er collets on E-bay you never know the quality till you receive them so take your choice.
