      Hi All,

I have read many posts about the virtues of 3 phase motors with inverters, but have a question regarding single phase motors.

Having rebuilt my Super 7B, I am at the stage of attaching the motor and drive assembly. The motor that was driving my lathe previously was as an old 1/2 hp single phase motor (no brand name) which was obviously not the original motor, as is has been attached to the mounting plate previously with a rather crude adaptor plate.
The motor is a rigid mount style motor, not a resilient mount type, as recommended by Myford – the motor is worn, but quite useable.

My question is, would there be any real advantage in sourcing a new resilient mount single phase motor – would this make any appreciable difference? Has anyone had a similar experience?

      Thanks,

      James

          Hello James,

I removed a clapped out Myford 1/3HP motor from my ML7-R last year and replaced it with a second hand 3/4HP Brooke-Crompton motor (no resilient mount) which I purchased from a company that reconditioned all types of motors. The company was down near the south coast.
I did not detect any difference in noise or vibration levels at all. I was fortunate that it was also a perfect fit on the baseplate with no mods needed.
As far as a surface finish when using fine feed it looked no different from when the previous motor was installed.
It is well worth considering talking to these type of companies that do reconditioned motors because you can pick up some real bargains (British not foreign) at ridiculous prices.

One thing I have just remembered, I also replaced the main motor drive belt with a link type belt which reduces noise and vibration anyway.

            Hi James,

You may see a difference in workpiece finish with the rigid mount transmitting more vibration, I was given a cheap rigid mount 1/2hp to replace the dead motor on my Boxford and it would not cut any thread without chatter.
Repaced it with an old but good Crompton-Parkinson and normal finish is resumed.

            Regards

            Paul

              Hi,

Thanks for your comments – sounds like the key is a decent british motor as much as anything else.

I guess you get what you pay for….
