Tom's super 7 went for a very low price as did his VMC vert mill.

I think he also had a Senior vertical mill.

David Urwick's own version of his superb Impetus lathe was bought by an enthusiast who wrote about it, where, unfortunately, I do not recall.

I often wonder the same thing about the workshop equipment and models made by the likes of GH Thomas and ET Westbury, Tom Walshaw etc. All seems to disappear without a trace.

Neil Hemingway called by my home one afternoon on his way home from GHT's. On the trailer was George's Senior Mill and a lot of other equipment from his workshop. I seem to recall SMEE showing one of GHT's lathe on one of their stands at Warwick. I assumed that it was donated to them, but I cannot say for sure.

        Regards

        Gray,

          Gray,

That's neat. So there is a chance that somebody somewhere has GHT's very first original Versatile Dividing Head and so on, rather than it sat in some relatives junk storage for a few years and then got dumped, as so often happens.

New Milton to Rochdale is quite a drive!

I remember GHT's lathe and some of his tooling being on display at one of the shows, probably at warwick as Gray says, somewhere around the early nineties if remembering correctly. Everything was beautifully made and finished as you would expect , so hopefully still preserved somewhere and being cared for. I saw GHT demonstrating using a super 7 at the M.E exhibition in the 80's, he was quite chatty and approachable, parting off MS bar with ease and a little showmanship! Made quite a few of his projects over the years and all of them have proved invaluable, particularly the small rotary table, small hole boring tools and boring head . Always thought he had a flair for design in that everything looked right , never built his dividing head as have a vertex one, but always thought it a most handsome design and a nice project.

Some of ET Westbury's engines were featured on the web a few years ago and were being cosmetically restored, can't remember if they were being sold off or not, but they were still around.

In the great scheme of things probably not important these things are preserved, but personally would hate to think of any of these things going to scrap.

I recall at an ME exhibition some years ago most, if not all, GHT's tooling that was designed and described by him in the ME was on a stand run by the SMEE.

Maybe someone who is a member could confirm that the masters originals are safe…

Yes I know it's a bit off topic but I would be happy that Westbury's engines, Tom Walshaw and GHT and others work was safe rather than rusting somewhere, unloved and unappreciated.

John Wilding the clockmaker sold by auction all of his clocks.

I recall seeing somewhere years ago a collection of ETW's original engines being held somewhere, it may have been a private collection. Unfortunately my memory is not what it used to be, so I cannot give any more details.

Just found a reference on wikipedia that ETW's engines are in the care of the SMEE and at the time of the entry were being restored at West Dean College. So it looks like they are in good hands.

Tubal Cain's son Tony Walshaw is/was a very capable professional model engineer. I would imagine he kept all the engines
