I have a Myford 254S in need of an oil change. There are 3 separate oil-baths – Headstock, Gearbox and Saddle. I have two questions :-

      1) The amount of oil required to fill each oil-bath to the required level.

      2) Which oil to use where – I know the Gearbox and Saddle use Febis, but I’m not sure if the Headstock uses Febis or Nuto.

      Any advice gratefully received.

        Hi Bob,

You can get the 254 User manual at: groups.io/g/myfordlathes (look in Files), Febis is a Slideway oil, Nuto a Hydraulic oil, the manual says Febis. I guess you need to be a member to see the manual.

I used Morris Liquimatic No4 32 Hydraulic Oil. I used this oil in the 254s gear boxes and for the slideways, I bought 5ltr,

I got the equivalent of Febis from a local supplier. Beware, something which looks like wax settles out and blocks the sight glasses, so you can’t see the level. I now just use straight 68 for gearboxes, and the Febis for the slides. This might only be a problem with this supplier of course.
