I've just finished my version of Harold Halls clever design for an advanced grinding jig. I have omitted the calibrations on the knobs for the time being as I cannot envisage using them. I can always do it at some point in the future if needs be.

If anyone ever considers making one of these rests the plans and build guide were published in the 25 years special issue of MEW. However, the details of the accessories needed for a range of T&C grinding operations using the rest only appear in Harold's book, "Milling a complete course". This handy book is number 35 in the Workshop Practice Series. In addition, some later modifications which Harold recommends are detailed on his excellent web site at:

      http://www.homews.co.uk/page59.html

      and

      http://www.homews.co.uk/page398.html

Next part of this project for me is to make all the extras.

Thank you for looking and thank you Harold.

Nice job. The shiny ball handles look better than the original style.

I like the brass knobs, i dont think i could get through that without slipping up somewhere and this looks immaculate. I was thinking of making that particular design.

Did you use steel leadscrews because brass tends to strip out? because i found i made some brass screws for another project and in the end, i resorted to using a brass "cap" and steel screw because it kept stripping out. (it was M4)

Thanks for your interest Michael. The knobs might be brass but the lead screws are made from good quality stainless steel studding which saved a lot of hassle.

                          Wot they all said.

Very nice execution of a well thought out, simple HH design.

Years ago i cobbled up something using a Myford vertical slide turned on it's side, and using various parts of HH's above design and his other T&CG rest referenced in his other book. It all worked quite well, but then a half finished Stent came along at the right price, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Well done Rik you really have made a fine job of it. Are you going to make a glass cabinet for it? I have seen many versions of my rest some made from aluminium because their mini milling machines were not up to the task for some of the machining. Another gave the rest a galvanised finish.

Just one point about the calibrations on the operating knobs these are purely to enable the user to put on very small amounts, say 1/2 to 1 thou, with confidence as that is about as much as should be ground of at a time. With the knobs being so beautifully finished you won't even see them turning. just joking.

                                              Like this ………….

                                              restmags.jpg

Using the magnetic DTI bases is one of Harold Halls suggested mods to the rest – a good one I think.

The angle base is aluminium which I have used to minimize the chance of the steel rest becoming magnetized.

"Did you consider tapering the shafts of those handles?"

Briefly, but I wanted to experiment by making this type of handle using a method I'd never used before.

I am using a similar system on my own much more basic rest which is designed to allow me to use the range of Tormek wet grinder jigs with a CBN wheel for roughing HSS tools. The yellow magnetic holders are by magswitch.
