      Hi all

I've been having a quick flip through some of the posts (the build thread as well) and having a bit of a chuckle over breakfast, lets not take things too seriously here, its just a hobby after all..smile

I have only looked through quickly so apologies if I have associated things with the wrong people, hopeful not though, please take the following as meaning no offence to anyone and all meant in a good natured way .smile

As ever I take opportunities to learn and pick up on things whenever I can – some of the replies were interesting, some a bit silly (to be expected), some showing some understanding (cheers) and some that I'll comment on.

Michael: you are probably quite right in all you said. thumbs up

Steve: that's a good question – team builds do sound interesting smile p

JS: yes too much detail posted (I'll remember that for the future), I kinda knew that as I was going along and kept asking if so, but no one did say anything – so speak up in future John if you have something to say, no room on here for 'timid timmies' you know wink 2. The trouble with knowing IT is it is all too easy to set things so that far too much can be uploaded very quickly and with next to zero effort. The stuff about thick skin, just baloney I'm afraid – you know as little about me as i do about you. Although I think you do maybe have your own business as did I for most of my working life – thick skin being a necessity for such things, maybe that you can relate to. smile

Neil: I would disagree about some of the build threads taking too long, I've enjoyed taking my time and I think ME is by design a long process, also I think a reference to more complicated or challenging projects being more suited here, well yes thats fine but it did sound to me to be in preference or be more interesting to beginner efforts – many of your website advertisers like / need people like me to bring in some new and ongoing money to the hobby for the futuresmile

I've learned an enormous amount here and will continue to look in I'm sure – enough now so that the books and magazines make enough sense to be able to delve deeper and take my little knowledge further..

Brilliant hobby, shame I didn't quite get to the end on here with the No. 1, but very close, and all great fun and very interesting..smile

God knows how I'll get on on the other forum…laugh

      Cheers for now

      Garry

Garry, you will fit in fine at MEM as they build lots of engines there. I am sure you will get a good welcome as some of the contributors here are also there. That forum is where a lot of HMEM contributors went when the forum was sold off against their wishes.

They let me in so i am sure you will get in laugh

This thread seems to now have suffered the “creep”…and now become a “ideological” discussion.

            Gary..post as you see fit.

As the one who introduced the word “sterile”…that at one occasion you have commented on above…
Ok but in fairness this thread in the start ( prior to say nov 12) was anything but ( imo).
As has been said above..I might not be too intrested in the specific build ( In this case I am) but I am interested on the how and what.

Hi Garry, I'm still watching, have been since the thread started, it's a good inspiration to all. Don't worry about posting too much, post too little and some thing will be missed.

MEM would love to welcome you, but please at least post a little of your progress here, there are a good number who want to see the out come of your build. There are a number of one's who post on both forums.

                .

                Hi Garry,

I should like to state that I have no gripe with you and consider this thread to have been one of the best on here and would also like to congratulate you upon the progress and quality of the build so far. But :-

I shall not mince my words and shall speak my mind. – I think you are bang out of order to keep throwing a hissy fit and chucking all your toys out of the pram. This is the second time you have done this on this site and bailed on this build. The first time you deleted all the images and for both this and the Victoria build you had done. (also very good) resulting in them being useless threads and thus this one having in the title 'continued' as it was then started anew.

It is of course your choice to pull the plug on the thread. (for whatever reason that may be) But have you considered the effort, time and trouble that others have given you by contributing and assisting in this thread. All wasted.

Pretty damn bad form and manners if you ask me.!

Enjoy the engine when it's done.

                Good luck and regards, Nick

Heck, lighten up Nick. I trust those remarks are directed at all the other unfinished threads on here as well laugh

As I said I do this for enjoyment and gave it my best shot, interesting you mention manners..smile

As I found the negative remarks posted to the 'build thread' depressing and off-putting I chose to walk, my choice I think, we are all different and what I do is none of your business at the end of day – I have always thanked people for their help – and I tried to carry on regardless as asked but the enjoyment on here had diminished as a result. This is a hobby thats all..!

and I'm not interested in any more comments like this, I'm done here after this, it confirms I'm right to try elsewhere – links turned off.

I have attempted to leave as best and politely as I could, I could have just stopped posting as others have done.

The End – lock or delete as you see fit.

                  Cheers

                        Oh Garry,

I do think you are taking this all far to seriously. Anyone putting things up in front of people has to do it in the anticipation of both brickbats and bouquets.

                        fare ye well,,

                        Neil

P.S. I would say my post elsewhere about long build threads was aimed more at people like myself – my Adept thread that has been 'stalled' for nearly a year.

Well it proved my point, you just couldn't resist coming out of the wings for one more "encore"!

As I see it, you've got two choices now.

                          1. You walk away leaving a lot of people pissed off who have been following your thread and assisting you when you needed help. Fine if you want a considerable amount of people thinking you are a complete knob. Take in mind that you'll need more than a name change if you intend popping up on another forum to do another build thread. That anally clean lathe will give you away in seconds and all those people you've pissed off will be on you like a ton of bricks! I don't think you could live with yourself posting pics with a lathe covered in oily snot & swarf! 😥

                          2. You hold your hands up saying " I think I may have mis-interpreted the feelings of my fellow forum members regarding my contribution to our wonderful hobby" (you don't have to use my words, you can be as theatrical as you like). Follow this with a pledge to continue your thread to a steamy conclusion and I'm sure you'll benefit from a mass group hug and I personally will buy you a box of Snickers for your primadonna moments and cease to consider you a knob! Just remember one thing though, you are some bloke called Gary building a Stuart engine, not Gary Barlow. Your audience is mainly adult male, not X Factor teeny boppers so expect adulation to be suitably restrained!

So if you chose no.1, cheers then but remember you can run but you can't hide! If you chose no.2, carry on with the good work mate & what's your address so I can send you the box of Snickers!

                          Martin.

Garry, my apologies if my comment above seemed terse – I just meant that if people have problem with build threads, it's their problem not yours.

As for my comment elsewhere when I referred to slow threads that don't progress, I specifically had this one in mind as an exception that does have regular updates; I thought that at least was clear (I even referenced my own build thread as an example).

crying Bang goes a thread I often catch up on. One of the few. Probably unique actually. Just as I saw you do something sensible too – not bothering to face up both ends of a short piece of bar to be held in a 3 jaw. No point doing that what so ever so carry on doing the sensible thing.

Must admit you are leaving me on tender hooks. I wonder just how you will get round the missing "ridge" on the eccentric sheave to match the groove in the strap.

Maybe it's a balls up. We all make them from time to time. Maybe it's not. Maybe it's the real reason for the current reaction. Me if it was a balls up I'd just get another chunk of what ever it is and do it again.

Listening to the parting off video and probably elaborating on what Jason might have said. I would wonder about 2 things with noises like that. Tool maybe a touch to high or a some what faster feed needed. The latter is why I part off and face by hand even though I have power feed. I've no objection to using oil on cast iron at all. It tends to improve finish on any material even brass. The only problem on cast iron is that it leave a messy sludge so generally people cut it dry. Speed, fine but with knob controlled speed I would probably wind it up once the intermittent cut is done.

well, that's just great isnt it!

one of the best threads on here by Gary who spent much time and effort posting his build got abuse and offensive remarks after he decided not to continue. those of you who made such remarks after Gary's decision deserve to hold your heads in shame, and if i was a moderator i would have deleted at least 5 of the above posts as not complying with forum rules, and probably suspended you as well.

at least one of the moderators must have seen these posts. (i read Michael Gilligan's original post and dont know what happened there as it wasnt in any way other than ok). why havent the moderators reacted to the 5 posts that i noted? is it permissable to slag off someone who is still a forum member and who has provided such a wonderful and detailed informative build thread? does he deserve to be taunted with remarks such as 'troll' or with 'snickers bars'?

Gary was doing this to help encourage other beginners like himself. he was perfectly entitled to decide for whatever reasons to stop. he isnt being paid for it, unlike magazine contributors in the ME or MEW. he could have earned a very reasonable fee for serialising his build thread instead in ME/MEW but didnt do so and provided his experiences and progress for all to see free on here.

                                                  cheers,

This is the second time the guy has acted like a child, and he is getting slagged off because of it. No one is slagging off his excellent build thread.

I drew up my armchair and have been doggedly following this build (and the other one) and feel a bit let done now (I was shocked by the stupidity of it all). Yeah, I got in this theatre for nothing and should not expect anything, but it is a bit of a let down aint it..

Yeah, he has a right to pull out (which he did), but there are adult ways of going about things.

                                                      hi steve,

to use your theatre analogy i am sorry if you feel your free ticket meant you didnt see the third act of the play after watching the first two acts. but that was Gary's prerogative, and whether he did it before is irrelevant. my point was that he doesnt deserve the abuse subsequently, which has remained un-moderated, and which IMHO is against forum rules.

                                                      cheers,
