      Mazola (where did they get that name from? wink)

      Maize-oil – -> Mazola

      Canada Oil –> Canola

      Castor Oil –> Castrol r

        Most "cress" sold in the supermarkets seems to be actually something like 95% rape these days. I suppose you could probably use almost any brassica for this purpose if you consume them before they have grown more than the initial pair of cotyledon leaves – cabbage, turnip, sprouts, mustard, kale, broccoli, cauliflower etc. And all have the same yellow flowers and cabbage patch whiff….

        And all crucifers are, alledgedly, edible.

        Not so sure sprouts are myself.

            Wooo – it gets worse. I'd never heard of The Triangle of U before. That's Neil's fault. I think I'll take that as a warning and head back out to the workshop forthwith.

              Ah. New to me too and I've got a botany degree…

              So 'u and non-u' refers to whether you eat sprouts or not.

                    Gets even more complicated. Food grade Oilseed Rape has been modified as described by Roderick to reduce the Erucic Acid content (<2% in the US, and <5% in Europe). This was done to reduce a health risk. On the other hand Industrial Oilseed Rape is desirably high in Erucic Acid (up to 45%) , as it is used in the plastics industry and to make lubricants.

                    When used for 'our' purposes, say as a lubricant, does the difference between the two types of oil matter?

                      Rice Bran Oil seems to have love/hate relationship online.

                      So is it any good or is somebody trying to flog me another latest fad?

                        As a long-chain oil with an organic acid group on the end giving it a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail, it will have some 'detergent' properties. These are probably related to why it 'clings' to metal surfaces when exposed to steam and why it was so popular as a steam oil.

                          When I kept bees we used to put them on the rape & as said above you've got to extract it quick before it crystalises, we used to watch it till it was about to be capped then spin it off put new foundation on & keep the spun frames ready for the autumn crop of heather honey,[ I live in n. yorkshire not far from the moors] of course the main reason for the massive increase in production was the farmers got good subsidies for growing it.

                            Some months ago, there was someone on the television warning that one of the common edible oils should not be heated for cooking purposes, as it gives off a dangerous gas! Trouble is, I can't remember which one! It's a bit worrying.

                              Olive oil is best not over heated, that's probably the one. For frying I use "Salad and Cooking oil", it's maimly canola oil, but say's it may contain traces of peanut oil. This oil was recommended by my chief nephew, as it has a higher temperature before it starts to smoke.
