I've done most from rectangular section either flat bar of sized from a larger block. I think it is the easier way for someone with limited equipment as you don't need a way to index the round stock as rotate it to put in the reamed holes, cut the slot and then mill the faces down.

I have dome larger ones by starting with round stock which is handy when you have large curving transitions which can be done with a ball turner.

Morning Jason, I am about to start the conrod, turning it from round bar. I was thinking of turning/tapering the rod with a small round nose tool and then grinding up a larger rad tool to cut an outside rad to blend in the rod to the square sides at the crosshead end if that makes sense. Do you think that would work ok.

You could do it that way Ron or just rough it out freehand and then blend with a file against the rotating work.

I started building my Muncaster as my first model just over 12 months ago and did most of it last winter. I have just started on it again and tried it on air today. To my surprise it ran first time.

              Short video of it running:

Need to paint it and get some better fixings, but happy that I have managed to get to this stage.

              A bit slower than Jason!

Looks like you have made a very nice job of that, look forward to seeing some photos once it's painted.
