Hi Steve, thanks for straightening that out, is a bit strange to put them in that order.

Luckily, I think the A size is about right for my lathe, which makes it quite a realistic proposition of getting in the near future.

I'd be very interested in hearing about why anyone else in this thread who is just about to buy one of these, chooses any particular one, or anyone who has purchased one, why they chose the one they did.

      Thanks again.

I'm toying with getting a set, I emailed PeWeTools yesterday for confirmation of the size for my machine, its just over an A as the cross slide is 80mm wide and I would be interested in some extra holders for 16mm tooling. I would also like a holder for my 26 x 1.5mm parting blade (an excellent bit of kit from JB Cutting Tools) as it doesn't seem a great idea to put the holder it fits into another holder. It is a big chunk of money though if extra holders are included in the costing, if you don't have enough holders for all the commonly used tools plus a few I can see there isn't any real advantage. I can see me needing at least six holders plus a parting off holder plus some sort of boring bar holder.

I have to say I’m leaning towards the Pewe size ‘A’ set with a few extra holders.

if I was planing to buy 10 x holders I’d probably go the create route but I want to add as I go along and having Pewe in Germany is better for this I feel.

            Steve,

I've never really looked at the PeWe site and they offer some interesting accessories. Like Paulimot, PeWe are based in Germany so you can get them delivered without the worry of of import duties etc. (until Brexit changes things!!)

I also notice they do a holder to hold a die grinder/Dremel type tool – could be useful for internal grinding etc.

I still suspect that most of these units are all made by Create of similar in China.

Create do a retracting toolholder but I can't get any response from them…

            Keep us posted.

            Matt

So I've ordered the following from Pewetools:

                  'A' set with 16mm x 75mm holders

                  Parting holder

MT2 sleeve, insert for boring bar tool holder

                  And on back order:

                  Boring bar steel holder

I'll post some feedback when I get them.

Peter is good to deal with and very passionate about his products

Excellent, well done Steve! I'm almost there with Peter, some of the holders I want are out of stock, I'm waiting for a reply to confirm a delivery date for the out of stock parts.

For those who are wondering who Peter is, his full name is Peter Wendlandt and he is the owner of the company (hence the PeWe co.name). He has been making his version of Multifix since 2006 and has traveled to China on a regular basis to ensure quality and manufacturing is to his satisfaction. He also has an engineering business.

Hi Steve, would you mind posting a few photos of your new tool post and holders when it arrives?

My new lathe came with only 2 dickson tool holders, and from the comments on here, replacements can be a bit and miss, so I'm unlikely to keep it, but before I dish out £400 on this, I just need a little reassurance.

                      Thanks, Pete

As a hobby machinist the last thing I need to do is spend £400 on a quick change system. If I needed to earn money with a lathe though those Multifix QCTP do look much better than anything else I’ve seen (I’ve used Dickson where I used to work) and if Dan Gelbart uses one they must be the best!

Having used Multifix tool holders on a Schaublin lathe for 20 years or so I cannot recommend them enough, they allow you to postion tools as you want and take seconds to set up.

The range of holders is good allowing various tools to be used. they are compatable with one particular cutting tool system. But they are expensive.

                            Hi Pete,

                            Of course, no problem.

Yes they are not cheap, but I think compared to the other options out they're a great design.

My A set plus a parting blade holder, arrived today, it need de-greasing but first impressions are excellent. I'll need to make a new tool post stud to suit my lathe before I can make any swarf…

Seeing it there with something for reference, it's definitely a pretty substantial lump of metal, given the speed in which they sorted you out, as soon as I get confirmation back from Peter on the arrival of the 1675 tool holders, I'll be placing an order.

Very quickly Steve, I guess they were shipped on Monday as I paid for them on Sunday. You should get your order today or tomorrow then – look out for the DPD van!

Sounds good Pete, hope they are in soon…

One thing I did check yesterday was the internal register diameter that needs to be a good fit on the clamping post and it's 26mm. I've had to order a piece of steel to make a new post, I didn't want to modify the one that came with the lathe, as I hadn't got anything suitable.

I noticed there was a hardness readout with the tool post, one of the standard tool holders and the parting blade holder, a nice touch I haven't seen on any "hobby" tooling I've bought.

I placed an order with PeWe tools yesterday, their current sales for most of the out of stock items are actually the incoming stock arriving next month, so if you're interested in buying anything, might want to do it now, as it's a realistic possibility it could sell out before it physically arrives.

I purchased an A+1 set, which is the A size tool post kit with 4 holders +1,so 5 in total.

At the current exchange rate when I made the payment, it was £326 including post for this kit.

My order from PeWe tools arrived earlier, along with 2 holders I hadn't ordered, but had enquired about but told him I'd make another order in the future, and he put them in free of charge, 2 blank holders to machine into custom holders, what an incredibly nice thing to do.

I really need to move into the current century and get a 3d printer, there are a few useful things on there.

I'm glad to hear you're happy with it so far, I think in retrospect, it's pretty good value for money compared to what else is on the market, they were out of parting tool holders, but the iscar parting tool I'm looking at should go in one of the blank holders.

Have you noticed any rigidity difference over the old QCTP?

Yes, I have but I think its mainly down to the larger central tool post and machining a tight fitting a T nut type thing in the T in the top slide, the thread into the T nut was M20 coarse and M16 fine into the top of the new post. I followed a video from YouTube for all that, amending to suit my lathe, I think I might have linked to it in a previous post on this thread.

One thing I have noticed there is a much clearer view of the tool as its cutting which is handy.

Edit – this is the video, two parts, this is part one…
