I think my metric draw bar is M10 <checks> no it’s M12, but ‘your mileage may vary’.

I bought a ‘Metric’ mill that has an MT2 taper but was supplied with two draw bars, one metric and one imperial which covered all the fittings I have bought to date but it made me aware of some of the pitfalls with regard to tooling fitments. I know that some ‘Metric’ machines are being offered with imperial threaded draw bars so it may be worth checking yours.

I have had a quick look at MT3 taper ER collets from various well known suppliers and have found that there are at least four thread options on offer. These range through metric.BSW and UNF. If you can extract your draw bar then it may be worth measuring the thread diameter and pitch to identify the thread. If you don’t have a pitch gauge then trying various nuts, gently , and you may be able identify the thread or at least eliminate some.

              Cheers

                hi martin
tanks for the information i have a milling machine too and the draw bar thread is M12  for a MT3 taper   chuck ,i was looking at well known supplier site and their posilock  collect system MT3 taper is tapped for a draw bar but doesnt give the draw bar thread for that collet chuck on  their site .so i will e-mail them or phone them as i looked up the 27th edition machinery handbook and found no information about drawbars  for MT3/ MT2 tapers chucks.

                  Ted,

You should find, in the UK, your drawbar thread for 3MT is either 3/8″ Whit or M12.

It pays to have both on hand as sometimes you can buy a bit of tooling that isn’t your normal thread, and so having both, you can accomodate almost anything you come across.

Threaded rod makes ideal drawbar – just buy what you need to fit.

I find that I have to have drawbars in 10mm and 12mm metric, and in half inch UNC and Whitworth. Well, to be honest, often I don’t find, the one you want is always being elusive….

The machine itself has MT4, but of course many accessories are MT3 or MT2.

                      regards
                      John
