I have a dial gauge which I have always used with an articulated magnetic mount, so I bought it for lug mounting.

I now want to measure the runout on my table saw which means I want to lie it down on its back and attach it to a strip that runs in the slot in the table.

Do I need to buy another gauge without the lug mount on the back?

Most of the dial gauges I have (albeit not in Mitutoyo's league) came with both a lug back, or a flat one, and can be interchanged. All with four screws.

If you don't have a flat back in the original packaging with yours, I suspect it is fairly simple to make one. Mine are simple flat pieces (of steel or plastic depending on the guage quality) a couple of mm thick with four mounting holes round the periphery.

Take the lug back off (in a CLEAN environment), measure it up and make one.

Use a clamp bored and reamed to fit the stem.

Put the mag mount on the sliding strip with the gauge down low next to the base. Angle the tip down if you like – it will over-read somewhat but it will yell you where the problem lies.

Another thing you could do is make a plain back and swap it out temporarily, Usually, they are just disc of plain metal.

€2.44 for a back without a lug and I don't have to go far to get it.

Take the lugged back off before buying a plain one and have a look. You might be lucky.

                      Tried that, wasn't lucky.

I have a simple adaptor which allows you to check slots etc have a look. It is as far as I know from Mercer.

Have found a drawing of a Starrett Adaptor to do just that.

                          Look in my Albums.
