I used sintered pads on my 1984 Suzuki GSX550, simple reason, they took longer to wear out. It came with organics, and they wore out as the bike was run in (500 miles). As for the discs, well, they were cast iron & at 24000 miles, they show no signs of problems. (Shame about the rest of the bike) The lever needed a bit more force for the same braking, but never noticed anything else.

My suspicion is that it's a myth.

      Regards,

      Richard

        found this, Peter:

EAPCs – Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles

The Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles – EAPC – (Amendment) Regulations 2015 states that electric bikes that have powered assistance to a maximum of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) using a motor of no more than 250 Watts (maximum continuous rated power output) are considered bicycles and known as EAPCs, or electrically assisted pedal cycles.

Therefore type approval is not required. Pedelecs can be used legally without registration, road tax, a driving licence, insurance or the use of a crash helmet. They can be cycled on a cycle path and the rider must obey the laws appertaining to a standard pedal driven bicycle.

        Specifically:

To remain exempt from motor vehicle legislation, an electric bicycle must be fitted with pedals capable of propelling the bike and comply with the following:

        Power and Speed

Maximum (continuous) rated motor power 250W: EN15194 regulations require an electric bike to be capable of delivering 250 watts continuously without the motor being damaged (e.g. overheating).
Maximum speed with power assistance 25kmh (15.5mph in the UK)

          Neil,

That suggests to me that the rules & regs must be different in this instance as the motor is a 36V 500W jobbie. At least, I hope they are. And if they are not, I do not want to know – ignorance is bliss! I've actually had something of a look around for rules & regs – and not found anything that seems applicable.

I'm not sure how she found about this thing – I do know that a part of the 6 month repair & rehabilitation course was all about how to make the best of what she has, so I assume that she will have been told about any legal requirements. And in any case, although it is Portuguese, there is an established UK dealership providing sales and service so again, I expect they will know all about the legalistics.

Anyway, we have drifted off topic, and it's my fault, so may I suggest we leave it there.

            .

Some of you guys maybe able to help me.

I have a 2001 CB600 FS Hornet that needs some new brake pads. I cannot find out if to order Sintered or organic pads.?

I know the later ones will probably use sintered but not sure about the earlier ones like mine and I hear that the disk rotor has to be designed for sintered or will be damaged. Or is this an internet myth.?

            Cheers, Nick

Call David Silver Spares. They will be able to tell you the best parts for any model Honda and supply them at a good price.

Peter the uk regs say for an invalid scooter/wheel chair, max speed on road 8 mph, footpath 4 mph. Assisted pedal cycle 15.5 mph, it may have more than 2 wheels ie., a trike.

Another two day top speed event at Elvington this weekend sadly Rider Jack Frost from Ireland had his Hole shot van and top speed motorcycle machines stolen yesterday while in a hotel at South Milford.

When van found it was burnt out with two special motorcycles destroyed as well as a third Busa machine stolen.

As the machines are not insured in transit and £10,000 Snap on tools gone for a small business a hell of a blow.

Such a waste the work he has done in developing these bikes over the years is mind blowing now gone in mindless vandalism.

That terrible terrorist attack in Barcelona was near my Nephews accommodation he was at work at the time otherwise he might have been walking in the place the atrocity took place.

Earlier in the year after one of our local (Northern Irish) races a team stopped off at a hotel for a bit to eat. On returning to their vehicle they found the trailer and bikes gone. The bikes turned up later but the trailer didn't.

Unknown to many there are sites to check if 'your' new trailer has been reported stolen eg

Had a few hours at Elvington on Saturday despite a nasty side wind there was some very fast machines.

A Tesla car set a record at 154mph. Another lad was having a go with his street legal R/R turbine bike after a disastrous crash last year.

and … "Lessons will be learned" – probably the most often repeated phrases nowadays, and they suppose that things were different in the past. Not so, I think. The problem lies with one standard aspect of human nature – greed and the 'something for nothing' culture. It motivated the thieves who stole belongings from bombed out houses in WW2, the landlords who rip off tenants, the people who falsify insurance claims etc., etc. It's not new and it's no more prevalent now than in the past; maybe on a bigger scale and more reported but, really, just more of the same.

The answer? – Theoretically, a Leader or Leaders who exemplify policies and behaviour which would make such actions socially unacceptable. Needles in haystacks …?

2018 Ulster Grand Prix update as of today.

Major changes to the lace w:st=”on”>Ulsterlace> Grand Prix bike week in 2018 will include a restriction on the number of newcomers at the Dundrod meeting.>>

The Dundrod 150 will be replaced by four Ulster Grand Prix races which now will take place on the Thursday.>>

Experienced English riders Jamie Hodson and Gavin Lupton died after crashes at this year's Dundrod 150.>>

Clerk of the course Noel Johnston said that he would "look closely at each entry before accepting them".>>

"Particularly relevant for newcomers is that Dundrod is an incredibly fast and technical circuit which must be treated with respect, and that means doing a serious amount of homework before you ever head out on a closed road," added Mr Johnston.>>

"To that end, the overall number of newcomers will be restricted.>>

Just got MEW Issue 260 – October 2017. Enjoyed the 'bottle feeding a Tiger Cub' in Readers' Tips. Why did it take 60 years for some person to realise that babies, including a Baby Triumph, needed bottle feed! Thanks Chris for the hint.

Now what about a suitable nappy to hold the results of bottle feeding?

Have not been on the forum much this year due to health and now feeling armless in more ways than one falling is not good for you as you get older I don't bounce now.

Anyway apart from another 3 weeks before getting back to machine knob twiddling was on final stages of my en24t crankshaft then oops fell 2 weeks ago.

A PEEMS club member kindly picked up a 90mmØ piece of ductile iron for my pistons from M-Machine and another member brought it to my workshop.

I got a price for an 84mm Dykes piston ring today £40.63 I will be making my own now.

I have many articles on making model rings by various model engineers I wonder making an 84mØ Dykes if there is anything I should be careful about when heat treating a large ring using model ring methods?

Will order a blank from Westwood Liners they have centrifugal grey and ductile iron castings.

This will be used for rings and cylinder I saw Allen Millard using a Westwood blank for his replica 347cc 6 cylinder Honda.

You might try a call to a motorcycle dealer to ask if they have any stock rings for 84 mm bore. I don't know of any, but if there are some available off the shelf, it could save you a lot of work, and usually bike rings are not too expensive due to high production (at least they aren't too expensive here in North America). Just a thought.

Seems Dykes rings were used a lot on two stroke motorcycles but have not found any two strokes of my bore size.

Modern IC top rings have change a lot for modern engines the Dykes are still used in V8 full size Nitro fuelled dragsters but according to what I have read wear can be rapid due by the pressure exerted by gas pressure pushing the Dykes ring against the cylinder.

For my application would only be run for a short time so not too worried by wear.

My model steamer dykes ring 1.214"Ø 0.0625" wide worked well but modern full size compression rings rings are as thin as 0.039" with fancy coatings and some made of steel 9254 apart from the various cast irons.

More I read the more I wonder what to use for home made parts how technology has moved on with materials and engineering.

                                              Jim

I thought British bikes appreciated having a litter tray under the sump

Back in the workshop I had a month of TV and computers as not allowed to use machines how boring.

Continued machining drive side crankshaft after my trip 4 weeks ago did taper and screw cut its roughly assembled with dummy bearings.
Have kilograms of metal to remove on crankcases etc. when all important dimensions done.
Am going to start on ductile iron piston next it will be similar to the BDA piston in the picture then see how much to remove from cranks for balancing.
Reckon on incorporating the fuel and water pumps in the crankcase similar to the model.
My model record steamer is loosely similar to a design in 1949 Edgar T Westbury flash steam booklet.
Using more modern materials shows how old technology can be updated to increase power by a large margin.
Know doubt the steam generator is the key to power plus plenty of headaches non lethal flash steam generator bursts can be the norm when pushing the limits for steam power.
At one model meeting 3 generators popped then an alteration of feed and had years of reliability for a while.
Safety valves on my model type of generator can be a disaster as the tubing can be evacuated fast then overheats this can happen in a fraction of a second.
Lovely making experimental machines just look at how long the British steam car record holder took hope I dont take as long.

Full steam ahead cleaned up my 90mmØ x 12" SG billet then one of my favourite jobs making pistons.
Should be easier than my model slipper pistons I always made spares just in case they had a disaster.
Over many years apart from the dykes ring and the odd time a gudgeon pin needed replacing my pistons lasted well at between 11,000 to 15,000rpm not too bad for a meehanite piston.
With high temperature steam most oils were destroyed so solid lubricants have been used for the short distances the model runs approximately 19 laps of 100 metres a lap.
I have a handy book on how to make pistons from castings to finished product mainly for old American cars.
South Bend lathes manual had many fixtures for machining pistons in the days pre war when a garage made one off pistons nowadays materials and tolerances are a lot tighter.

A little surprised that there has been no mention on this thread of the BSB race series, particularly the Brands Hatch final weekend. A 3 race session in which 'Shaky' Byrne started 31 points down on Leon Haslam and won the final race to retain the title by 3 points. The level of racing was exceptional and, as a spectator spectacle, unbeatable value. Compared to the much over-hyped F1 series these guys are real sportsmen, putting themselves at risk both for personal pleasure and spectacular entertainment. Well done to all and roll on next season!!
