It must have been the recent discussions about dynamos that made YouTube suggest this video to me. Interesting to see how the magnet floats. Also some good lost PLA casting in the middle.

👍 Fascinating insight into his thoughts process and construction techniques. Shame the final result was a bit of an anti climax. Still well worth a watch though.

I thought the result was to be expected to be honest.  There is nothing constraining the axis of the spherical magnet when  the drum starts it will tend to tumble chaotically round the inside of the “sphere”.  At some point if he’s lucky it may line up parallel to the rotational axis and start to levitate like a cylindrical magnet does in a drum earlier on, but I’m not sure that would be stable or inevitable.
