      Hi all,

I am just staring out on building a quarter scale model of a Kerry speedc 8 pillar drill. I want to put realistic name plates on it so need to know how to source etched or engraved manufacturers name badges etc.

I have seen Barry Jordan's work and would love to know how he produced such detailed plates for his Bridgeport etc. If you're reading this Barry drop me a line!

I will post photos as I progress. Regards Mick

          Mick,

That sounds a great project, and at quarter scale, the finished item should be a useful little machine. [assuming it's not just for show]

I look forward to following your progress.

          .

P.S. … Just spotted your Linisher photo star

Neil did a write up on etching plates a while back in ME

The other options for things like the plates found on things like motor plates is to use self printed transfers for the darker areas. This is a screen printed one but transfers would work.

And a nameplate done with transfer paper on a home printer, thats 15mm dia

For simple raised letters you can get individuals from some of the model railroad suppliers, I did these with "Slaters" letters

Thanks for the posts. I have made waterslide transfers before but want to replicate the nameplates as realistically as possible.

I have a couple of companies who seem to be able to do this so I will keep you updated as to how things go.

The base of the drtill is complete as I decided to work from the ground up so that I had somewhere to put the drilling head when it was finished. Plus that's the most complex bit so I have time to learn about gear cutting etc.

              Regards mick

It's quite easy to make them yourself. I've used Mungolux photoresist film laminated onto brass sheet with SWMBO's domestic iron. A computer generated artwork printed with an inkjet printer on transparent film is then used to expose the UV sensitive film. I use a 3 second exposure to sunlight (cheaper than a light box) and develop in washing soda solution. Etching with ferric chloride at room temperature removes about 1 thou per hour. You can then fill the etched parts with paint.
