      Hello,

I have a problem with a missing part. After choosing a ML10 as my first lathe i decided to go and buy one, i found one i was happy with and purchased it.

After weeks of it sitting i finally got around to having a play, and then i immediately noticed the headstock was loose, and to my annoyance one of the headstock mounts (not sure if thats the correct name) was missing with the bolt rattling around in its hole. I had a very good look around the lathe when i went to buy it, but I did not even think to check if all the mounts were in the correct places.

Why anyone would remove a mount and not replace it is beyond me, but not the point – dose anyone know where i could buy a set of these?

I have scoured ebay and the lathe spare part stores including myford, to no luck.

Thanks for any advice or help

Are you looking for a replacement bolt?

If you are, the thread is likely to be Imperial, BSW or BSF rather than metric.

Check that the tapping has not been damaged . (Once I came across a lathe where one tapping had been crossthreaded, and tightening that fixing pulled the Headstock out of alignment. )

Once you have the Headstock capable of being firmly clamped, you need to ensure that it is correctly aligned when in place.

For this, you will need to an Alignment Bar, located in the Morse taper in the mandrel, rather than in a chuck,

Once the Headstock is correctly aligned, holding the Alignment between centres (Having trimmed up the Headstock centre in situ ) the Tailstock can be aligned..

Just thought, by "mount" do you mean a ring dowel which surrounds the clamping bolt?

If all else fails, carefully measuring the two holes in the Headstock and bed will provide dimensions to which you can make a ring dowel, if that is what you need. The OD is the important dimension, the bolt can be in a clearance hole through the ring dowel..

What do you mean by "mount". Can you post a picture?

If you mean the clamp which holds the headstock to the bed I sold some to someone recently, Not sure if he wanted them, but could put him in contact with you.

                Hi Ethan,

Just eyeballed drawing 11690 that I have for my ML10 and it sounds like you'll need item 43 (clamp) Part number A6491/1 plus item 45 ( adjusting screw ) Part number A6492. The bolt you seem to have been left with is item 44 and is 5/16th BSF x 1.5" long.

Probably best to email Myford, as it may be something they'll have kicking about, but not advertized as so rarely requested…..I guess. But if not, it's simple enough to make….you just have to make sure there's no debris under the front bevel of the bed, which is the clamping reference face. And of course do the checks noted by Howard. I'll try and add a picture of the drawing section…..when I work out how.

                Regards, Allan

Forgot to include top face of bed too, plus headstock faying surfaces for absolute cleanliness. And remember to align the pulleys and leadscrew drivetrain….but you probably know that, so I'll leave you in peace. Good luck.

Hmm, adding pictures was torturous enough, but trying to get rid of a duplicated post is so far impossible. I've tried edit post > click on pictures > scissors > save changes….did nothing. Tried again using the eraser icon, still no luck. I'm even more convinced I should stay well away from going CNC.

So sorry folks; duplicate sets of pics is set to stay.

Thanks gents for the help, much appreciated. Alignment is a job im equally excited for and nervous for, im consuming as much data as i can.

sorry the photo is upside down. lathe.jpg

You could easily make a replacement, you have one to copy.

I totally agree. It's just a bit of flat bar basically, and not all of the dimensions are critical. A good first project!
