Well to get the TE section off to a start I had a break from the workshop today and went over to MJ’s openday held at the Reading clubs track. It was good to chat to other builders and potential builders. Here are a few pics of the engines that were there.
John A’s 2″ Fowler, he’s a bit behind me so wanted to know how I tackled some parts.

Another Fowler, the builder is waiting to get his tender sides flanges so again was looking closely at my tender as its a bit hard to make out some of teh details on the drawing.

A very nice Clayton, not one of MJ’s products but the Yately livery suggests its local

2″ FowlerShowmans (this is for sale contact Alan)

4″? Fowler Showmans well under way

2″ Burrell roller with interesting scariffier

Almost complete Burrell roller(Again for sale, contact Alan) This is the 7th MJ engine this builder has made:eek:

Bloody nice 2″ Fowler, who could have made that

      2″ Burrell GM showmans

Seems a shame to paint them don’t you think

Thanks to Alan & MJ for an enjoyable day and the members of the Reading Soc for the use of their facilities and catering.

      Jason

Hello jason, we meet again! I have just resumed the Fowler for the next week and intend to get the hornplates fixed (as soon as the fixings arrive) then she will be standing on all four wheels and I will make a start on the tender over the next couple of months.
For other readers information I am building the same model as Jason and am recording the build on my website (I am having problems since switching host so will post address again when problems resolved)

Although this was taken last year and a few items ‘taped’ on……I will posta more up to date picture at the end of the week.

Brilliant pics Jason, there’s some quality stuff about isn’t there? Trouble is I look at such quality and wonder whether my skills would be up to producing something that good yet. Still, it’s something to aspire to, anyway, whilst I am still working I couldn’t devote the time to such projects and they also cost a lot of money so, roll on retirement and when I sell my business I may be able to embark on such a project myself, meanwhile I’ll just plod along learning as I go.
Bloomin inspiring pics though, I shall dream about those tonight and will, no doubt be rudely awakened by ‘er indoors when I start muttering “castings, cylinders, valves…..” in my sleep!

            Cheers, John

The one thing that really gets me with all model engineering drawings is the lack of detail in the measurements, In mj’s book on the Fowler it says “leave sufficient end float to allow for expansion of the boiler when hot” this is in reference to the length of the shafts  instead of actually quoting the end float. This happens in most drawings and if someone has never built an engine before they won;t know how much it is likely to expand
