Mitutoyo Caliper

I have a relatively new (3 years) Mitutoyo caliper model CD 6" Atx Digimatic.

I realized after 2 years of use that it does'nt switch off if not used for a while.

M Dro told me that it does'nt , and many users prefer it that way.

Checking on line Mitutoyo make no statement on this point., other than

to suggest that three and a half years battery life with normal use.

Can anyone confirm that what I was told, is correct.

That is correct Lynne the Mitutoyo calipers don't auto turn off. I have the Mitutoyo Digimatic 6" /150mm caliper and the battery life is excellent, but I always tend to turn them off after use, force of habit I suppose after using cheapo calipers with three month battery life! And my 12" Moore and Wright calipers have a very poor battery life too, so I think Mitutoyo have the best electronics.

I also have a Mitutoyo 150mm digital caliper that I bought over 30 years ago and they don't turn off automatically, still going strong after all these years.

A cheap new digital caliper I have does turn itself off, it also turns on automatically as soon as the jaws are moved.

I don't have any name brand ones, but I have some that do turn off automatically and some that don't. One thing that I have noticed with the ones that don't turn off automatically is that if you push the button to turn them off, and then move them while they are off and then turn them on, they are now reading the size you have moved them to. In other words, the measurement part is always going, and the button only blanks the display. So they are consuming some power the whole time. This might explain the relatively poor battery life that some have.

The display being LCD, it should not consume a lot of power. How long do the batteries in watches last?

I don’t really see what the problem is, I have Mitutoyo, Mahr and Aldi / Lidl brand digital callipers, as said before the Mitutoyo are always on and the others turn off after a period of time, just moving the slide on the Lidl / Aldi ones brings them to life again at the correct setting, the Mahr brand has to be closed shut and then turned on. I buy packets of batteries from a pound shop, they have about five of five different sizes, the grandchildren’s toys take two of the sizes and the callipers take another size so jolly good for a quid. Sometimes I turn them off, sometimes I don’t, I seem to use two batteries per calliper per year.
