Missing Valve Linkage.

Would anyone care to speculate where the valve linkage ran on this mill engine. The eccentric still remains and can be seen behind the crank and the valve rod, yoke and two link arms are all that is left at the cylinder end.

No doubt there was some form of rocker shaft with levers, there is very little room for an eccentric rod to run without it hitting the gears and a single rod would foul the cylinder.

Have a look ***HERE*** also St.James' distillery Martinique. it shows the eccentric at the flywheel end with a transfer shaft possibly running through the base to the cylinder side.

Having a second look, it appears that a good part of the cylinder is buried. The linkage may well come up from underneath, there are two rods either side of the valve chest which connect to the valve rod. So transfer shaft or rocker underneath driven from the flywheel eccentric.

Is this going to be your next project?

There is also what looks like a plate with 4 holes centrally on the base on the flywheel side, this would have been an ideal place to mount a feed pump that could have been driven by the flywheel eccentric, you quite often see them at the opposite end of the crankshaft to the cylinder?

If it did do the valve then it would just need some simple levers and links to transfer the movement under the engine and up to the yoke on the other side.

It's in a folder titled "future projects" so is a possibility. I have fancied doing a cane crushing mill for some time and the six column beam engine driven ones are quite common but this one took my eye. There is also one with a horizontal engine and another "A frame type where the far end of the crankshaft is supported by a wall and rolls on the other side.

This one will probably come before the cane mill

Engine appears to be by George Fletcher &Co. But I can't find out much about them on the interweb.

Thanks John I'll have a look tonight, thought it may have been a McOnie asthey also did cane crushing machinery and the similar wall mounted engine is by them.
