Misidentification

Recently saw someone post an image of a hand vice and asked what it was. I was amazed at the people who identified it as a pin vice or a tool makers clamp. Nearly as common as the correct answer, and got likes from others.
I have often said the best thing about the Internet is that anyone can post anything, but it is also the worst thing.

The worst one I have seen is fairly common, a hay / silage knife being identified as a froe – they clearly hadn’t used either.
I often wonder why people make such clearly wrong posts, or if they actually believe what they are claiming.
Someone did say that they knew a hand vice as a Manchester vice, I assume that one is genuine.

Although … a Google search for “manchester vice” doesn’t do very well.

Not really bewildering as I was answering File Handle, likely whoever was asking about the hand vice had seen it in MEW, here or was the SMEE member that did noyt know either. The times of our posts would seem to suggest I had not even seen your reply.

No not referring to that one, not on here but elsewhere. My reference to likes might give a clue. This was it:

Very similar to one of mine. I was just amazed that many, who clearly hadn’t a clue seemed to think that they did. The comment that I liked best was that it couldn’t be a vice because it wasn’t fixed down.

Given your reference to ‘elsewhere’ the ignorance doesn’t surprise me. The denizens of that place seem to have the intelligence of a dead gnat and can’t be bothered to do even a google search before posting the  dumbest of questions, let alone actually read a book.

Don’t disagree, just surprised by how many are convinced that their wrong answers are correct.
