I have just purchased six loco wheels for LBSC’s Minx. They are all identical, but I have seen the same model with a different weight arrangement on the drivers. Does this matter?
Secon question. Will a Maid of Kent boiler fit a Minx?

          Hi There
          Minx is different.
You need the original Model Engineer magazines. There are several other differences.
          regards David

              Hi Jon
              No, not at the moment.
I would think wheels are different on each.
I will check what I can find later.
              What are the two locomotives?
I think one is a 4-4-0 and one an 0-6-0.
And what railway company are they?
              regards David

Hullo David, An LBSC design based on LB&SC C2 or C2x. The wheels are the right ones for Minx (5inch dia.0-6-0), but they all have the counterweight at 180 degrees from the crankpin. On some Minx models the counterweight is at about 30 degrees to the crank pin on the drivers.. I believe this was originally (full size) to stop “hammerblows” on the rails. Are the counterweights on small locos purely decorative? I suspect they were all made the same on my wheels to avoid a second pattern for the drivers. Thanks, Jon.

                  Hi Jon,

The Minx driving wheels have the balance weight on the same side as the crankpin but slightly offset. The leading and trailing wheels should have the weights directly opposite the crankpin.

Although in LBSC’s intro to the locos he says the boilers are the same, the boiler described for Minx is different to Maid of Kent. The barrel is the same but the Minx firebox is 2 inches longer and 0.25 inches wider.

Maid of Kent is based on the Southern L1 class and Minx is based on the rebuilds of the
                  Vulcan Class C goods loco.

                  John

Thanks John. As I have six wheels the same, any suggestions what to do about it?

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it Minx is not an accurate representation of the original anyway and the weights do little, if anything, in ‘our’ sizes. If you wanted to though, you could machine off the existing balance weight on the drivers, reprofile the spoke ends, and then build up a new balance weight in the correct position from P38 filler or similar. I’ve done that before.
