Milling cutter sharpening services

I have decided that life is too short to build my own end-mill sharpening machine and learn to use it so have found a couple of UK companies on th WWW offering their services.

Following the near completion of the chassis on William I have about 9 end mills and slot drill cutters from 5/8 inch down to 3/32 needing sharpening – are using these companies used by the model engineering community and economical in your experience?

A good question – I await answers with interest! ( Although I have a Stent  under construction so maybe I hope commercial sharpening is not too cost effective! )

 

 I like your pics of  William – nicely executed I think. I made a start on this loco when Martin Evans first published the design. I completed the boiler and the frames / motion nearly to the state you are at. Sadly life in general and work demands in particular then brought all to a shuddering halt !  It now sits, reproachfully, on the shelf in the workshop. Maybe one day I will return to it. Please keep posting pics – I’ve always thought it an attractive loco and would be interested to know how it performs on the track.

Hi Tony.

             Any cutter under 10mm or  3/8ths really isn’t worth the bother, as brand new tic N coated centre cutting end mills can be bought for £3.0 from Arch Euro Trade.  12mm cutters are only £4.0   Larger cutters can be worth re-grinding, but in my experience of some forty years in precision engineering, there are cutter grinders and there are cutter grinders.   If the company offers CNC re-grinds all well and good.  Other firms that use hand operated cutter grinders, often work on a piece work basis and some of the results can be a bit grim.

Agree that anything under 8mm is not worth regrinding, but some will if you pay a reasonable price.  All of my other sizes are reground by ABBCO, Wilmot Lane, Chillwell Road, Beeston, Notts. NG9 1ER. Tel 0115 922 6060.  Yes it is right next door to Myford.   Highly recommended firm.
