Hi, I am currently building the D & NY 2" scale Traction Engine.

I am working on the rear axle brackets and need to mill the area where the axle block moves up and down. This is like a T slot. The area to be machined is 1 1/4" wide x 1" high and 2" long. The lip each side that makes it a T slot over hangs by 1/8" each side. (Hope this makes sense) My question is can I use a T slot cutter to machine this. Or is there another way.

      Thanks

      Garry

Good morning Garry, I am not familiar with traction engines but from your description of the component a T slot cutter is the way to go. Just make sure the cutter , shank relationship is enough to to cut the depth you need, most will be for sure.

Hi John,Thanks for the reply. I think I be using a T slot, I just wanted to know if this was the right way to go, or if there was another way of doing this.

Also make sure you use a T slot cutter, not a Woodruff cutter.

Short of using a slotting head or built up construction the tee slot cutter would be the way to go, mill out all you can with a standard cutter and just use the tee slot one for the inder cut.

Also make sure that the diameter of the head is at least 1/4" larger than the shank, some small tee slot cutters just have a neck for shallow clearance then a large shank.

Thanks Jason, am now looking on the web for a cutter.
