      Complements of the season everyone.

      Please can someone advise on what would be the better steel type for making a crankshaft. (8mm diameter journals with a 11mm throw).

      I have machined one out of  I think was ER24. Need a steel that is easy to machine.

        What sort of use will it get, I’ve made many out of mild steel for steam engines upto EN8 for IC engines that will likely only be run for display.

          Edgar Westbury generally used EN24T for his IC engine crankshafts. It is an alloy steels specifically produced for high stressed, high cycled items like crankshafts. It is readily available and cost about 20% more than mild steel. To me, one major advantage is that it is a real pleasure to machine (unlike some mild steels).
