      Hi Michael,

Sharpness will be down to my unsteady hand in low light. blush It's regarded by some as the sharpest of all the L series. I will do some tests over the next couple of days in either decent light or on the tripod.

      Anyway, it's this one :-

This shows what you should be able to get

laughSome don't like reviews like these but once some one has bought a few lenses they do indicate what they are likely to do in practice. There is also a need to be realistic about lens performance. As above states the Zeiss lens has similar "features".

I've been playing with APS macro photography instead of M 4/3. Seems to be more critical but no need for a close up lens so a bit more flexible not having to unscrew it at times. The problems might be down to the body I was using 100D. Finding out might prove expensive. I found I had to make some use of the autofocus and it's not happy in dim light. One decent result – well I think so. Red's are tough to get correct but at least it's close.

Working distance using M 4/3 macro lenses Michael. The focal lengths are too short so the best solution I have found on Olympus is the 75-300mm zoom plus a close up lens. Up to maybe 200mm it can give good results with an old Sigma close up lens on it. They produced it some time ago for one of their zooms. However in some situations on larger insects it's better to take the close up lens off as 300mm provides a decent level of magnification and a longish working distance. I've toyed with the idea of using one of Renox clip on ones but feel 2.5 dioptres would probably be too much for it. It might be worth trying though.

If I have a macro session I never know what insects I may find. The butterfly was shot with a 150mm macro lens and a 1.2x converter. It can work from 1:1 right up to telephoto distances. Some people who do a lot of it especially with the 100mm types also use an extension tube as well as the converter. In the butterfly's case on Olympus I probably would have needed to take the close up lens off.

I feel that the M 4/3 macro lenses are a bit sad really. The oly one is an excellent lens but the working distance is very likely to scare them off – also the problem of getting rather close. Access to them can be tricky.

Just add that the nice aspect of the long zoom plus close up lens is that I'm effectively using the zoom for magnification. The working distance from the end of the zoom lens is usually 12 – maybe 18". I aught to measure it to see how many dioptres it is.

Oh … It's the range of dedicated lenses that you are criticising.

M 4/3 is merely a sensor size & mount configuration, which is why I was bewildered by your original comment.

I get very good results with the kit telephoto [at around 75mm] plus a Minolta No.2 close-up lens.

For real macro work, I use all sorts of lenses on bellows or tubes; or the Tessovar.

For convenient [albeit manual focus] field work the old MicroNikkor is a joy; infinity to half life size on the helicoid, and to life size with a dedicated extension tube.

A crop I cheated on as the back end focus was a bit out.

F14, 221mm iso 400. A pretty heavy crop as well. I just use a distance and magnification to enable the detail to be seen clearly in the viewfinder – unlike many macro photographers but something I learned from microscope use where the problems are a lot worse. Too much mag is tempting.
