I must admit that Mick Knights series is one of the choice parts of MEW at the moment – as much for his storytelling style as the tips.

But I would love to see the tool he describes that makes the undercut shown in Fig 21 on page 15.

          Neil,

I thought as you did then I read again what he wrote & the light then switched on ! Mind you I got my copy yesterday(Thuursday) so have had a bit of time to think about it.

I agree about the Mick Knights articles. They are a pleasure to read.

I think he used two different tools to make that nifty double undercut. actually it might have been more than two to allow for breakages!

              Hi. All.

Thanks for the feed back, sitting at the key board can be a lonely place sometimes. A single tool is used for the double undercut, its a bit fiddley to grind but it has two cutting faces at right angles, so you plunge cut the first cut into the diameter to depth, then use the compound slide to advance the tool into the shoulder face, once done retract the compound slide and withdraw the cross slide. Makes a nice neat job. You can of course make the widths bigger to assist grinding and to take out larger tool rads.

              Regards.

              Mick

                Hi There

I think the drawing may have exaggerated the undercuts.

                Oh for a small chucker.

                regards David

I think the drawing wasn't quite right then, otherwise it's a bit like carving balls inside a cage.
