Metal Shaper January 2016

G,Day. Harry Cole is my name from Australia. I’am trying to build the Model Machine Tool, Metal Shaper shown in Model Engineer commencing January 2016. Has anyone tried to make this model, frankly I’am having trouble making sense of the drawings shown, ie, Fig 10 Cross Rail item on left side among others as measurements seem to be omitted from quite a number of details. Any clues would be appreciated. Thank you. Harry Cole

I did see a build thread on another forum but can’t locate it at the moment.

Item on the left is looking at the end of the cross rail from the handle end, any particular dimension you can’t see or need?

Thank you Jason for the information and the link to the similar project. I found the detail in Fig10 quite confusing mainly because the dimensioning lines blend with the item but you clarified my understanding of the detail. Can I also ask you about Fig 8, what is the Ram Plate, where does it fit into the machine as the CAD detail shown earlier does not seem to show same, and what is the width of same, it shows length, 28.5, thickness, 10, but no width.

It looks like an elevation was missed off of fig 8 for the Ram Plate. I’ve asked Philipp via Youtube if he can provide the missing details and where it goes!

I’ve worked it out. It is the hinged part of the clapper box. The toolpost fits in from the rear of it with the 19mm dia flange stopping it from pulling out when the tool is tightened. The width will be 24mm to suit the other half of the clapper box.

If you are not sure of the details let me know and I’ll stectch it out.

Thanks Jason. As they say one picture is worth a thousand words, certainly the isometric drawing of the cross rail clarified everything so a sketch of the ram plate etc will be of immense help. Harry Cole

Here you go, 24mm wide to fit the other part of the clapper box. I went with a 5mm x 5mm chamfer on the bottom corners which looks about right.

As mentioned in the original post it is a model of a shaper, hence appropriate to ME.
