Some initial thoughts as to design parameters.

      1. Keeping to stock lengths means you can store as delivered.

      2. Material visible from the ends is easily to identify.

      3. Separate storage for off-cuts keeps the main rack tidy and splits the problem into two versions with different issues.

      4. Pulling out lengths horizontally is easier than vertical lifts especially in the larger diameters.

      5. Long racks of long stock accessed from the end can utilize space behind machinery and save space.

I would keep the long rack and solve the off cut issue with other storage.

      regards Martin

            Hi John,

A machine shop near me recently revamped their metal stock storage, they wanted to free up space inside the shop so moved the storage outside using a shipping container.

A series of long racks travel on rollers (Within a frame) from the door end of the container to the opposite end. The racks were withdrawn using a modified electric pallet truck and the required length of steel lifted out ( by hand or overhead gantry crane for the bigger stuff)

The container was placed end on outside the workshop wall into which an opening was made so the ends of the racks faced inwards .Allowing easy identification of the material and taking up none of the existing workshop floor. The first unit was so successful that another has been built and installed beside the first.

This is probably overkill for your needs but did seem to make storage and handling of lengths easier.

              Hi John

I too have used Metals4u when I needed some steel bar on the same day, they have a depot near to me and I went to pick it up. The price was ridiculous. I use FH Brundle normally however it is usually a couple of days for delivery but there prices are about a fifth of Metals4U.
