Metal Lathe Centering Roller Tool for chucked item

A simple idea how I quickly center up small pieces of offcuts. Not saying this is how anyone else should do it, but it works accurately for most of the work that I do. It doesn’t replace your Mitutoyo dial indicator for super accurate work, but as I say in the video its quick and easy.
      Hope it helps someone out.

The quick and lazy method is to chuck it lightly, run it in reverse and just use the cutter.

          Thanks for the video link.

I’ve got one lying around in the “what does it do” drawer in the workshop. Came in the big boxes of stuff parked next to the scrapyard find P&W. Shop made with obvious care so/ I kept it assuming that one day I’d find out what it did.

          Decade later I now know.

Works well on the circumference too.

I’ve got one of them too. Made from a smaller roller bearing bolted to the end of a bit of 3/8″ square key steel. Dead simples but works magic on both face and diameter. Much quicker than faffing about with washer chucks or parallel spacers etc for face truing. Not one of those things I use all that often but dead handy when I do.

I’ve been using one for a couple of years now. It does come in handy sometimes.

Instant destruction of the tool tip if its carbide!

I use mine on a daily basis as I’m always using small bits and pieces (those bit and pieces all of us never throw away).

If you have a 2 station QCTP, just use the blank end of any suitable tool in the other station.

Not at all. But You have to use veeeery little clamping force, barely enough to hold the part still. And I probably wouldn’t do it with a high rake insert.
