I seem to recall a thread or 2 here about Mellor Lathe restorations… hopefully those memberrs are still here.
I’m embarking on a functional restoration (ie getting it working is the main goal) of a Mellor lathe. Its mostly complete and, as far as I can see, in reasonably good condition.
The most significant missing parts are the cone clutch & gear plus the star-wheel clamp, all part of the cross slide power feed.
I plan to make replacements. but I’ve only ever seen the required parts in photos. I have no measurements. So, could I ask any member here with a Mellor, if they’d be kind enough to provide me with the following measurements, please?
A: Gear OD – by calculation based on the driver gear I think this is a 2.16″ OD and 24 teeth (12DP)…? (I know its actually a very slight helix)
B: is this the same as the driver gear? 9/16″?
C: central bore – is this 1/2″, to be a good fit on the shaft?
D: I assume this dimension is non-critical, but it’d be nice to be as close to original as possible,
E: the largest diameter of the clutch taper
F: the overall length
a: the taper’s included angle.
Given these, I think I can infer everything else I’d need to make this part, the matching half of the taper clutch & the star wheel. TBH, I imagine I could just wing it and guess the dimensions and still come up with a functional article, but I’d prefer to make the part as close to original as I can.
In addition, what can be used as a modern replacement for the internal spindle bearing oiler wicks…? I have one, which seems somewhat past its best…
Any assistance much appreciated.
cheers
Paul
