At college we have a DrillTru drill press where the chuck is held to the spindle using a taper (DIN on this version, but I don’t think that matters specifically).

I need to get the chuck off as it’s had an “insult” resulting in drill wobble, but I can’t see how this is achieved.

      It’s fitted with a Jacobs No34 chuck.

Specifically, there is no groove in the spindle to use taper removal wedges – there must be something I’m missing….

      Thanks!

There is a very brief video on the Meddings web-site … but it basically just demonstrates the use of wedges.

You could maybe call their bluff and ask why it doesn’t apply

            Thanks both.

It seems that what’s needed (video from Meddings, see link below, and a reply to my email to them) is wedges with an extra thick section to fit between the bottom of the spindle bearing assembly and the top of the chuck, rather than the more conventional wedges that fit in a groove. The Drill Tru has an even large gap than the machine shown in this video, but the principle is the same it seems.

Can’t find those to buy anywhere, but we can pack the gap out!

            Cheers,

            Youra.

Can you get a pair of chuck removal wedges somewhere in there? You hold them around the spindle and then whack them with a pair of hammers or if you can get one of them firmly supported you just need to hit one with a hammer. It sounds brutal but when I had to do it the taper released relatively easily.

Look for a screwed collar behind the chuck that has a capstan hole in the rim. Some makers used this design to push the chuck off the taper.

Edit  Looks like this design doesn’t apply to Meddings, my comment was interrupted by the call to breakfast

If you only have to remove the chuck for replacement and aren’t seeking ‘heirloom tools’, just cut a quick and dirty pair from MS flat with hacksaw / drill / angle grinder / WHY…
