Mechanical Mantel Clock

Good morning fellow engineers

I need some advice, not model engineering related so please excuse me.

I am looking to buy a friend a mechanical clock for a special birthday,

Anyone know of any company’s / outlets where i could start looking?

your budget would be handy to know as there are cheap clocks, middling clocks and eye wateringly expensive clocks.

If it is a 'special' freind and a 'special' birthday I would suggest a carriage clock, plenty of good jewellers sell good quality ones that will appreciate in value and will last a lifetime.

with clocks like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

there are plenty of clocks I would like but are WAY out of my price range.

I treated myself to a carriage clock nearly 20 years ago and recently had to have a new main spring fitted, the jeweler askied me how much I paid for it then told me it would now be worth at least 50% more. quite an investment.

I don’t really think so … at least not in the sense of ‘stock items’

You are in a good place to look for something special … but the wallet may get a hammering.

What about one of the many second hand ones that are around ?, try on line auctions etc.

Some of these were made in the 1920's so getting on to be 100 years old now.

If you want a really nice new clock, Sattler look very nice but they are expensive.

We bought this one here about five years ago.

Made in Paris around 1900 – we call her “Mademoiselle”. She set us back around £700.

This more modern German made Hermle skeleton was new and “nicked” at an auction for £7. We call it “Little clock”. You can get an idea what Hermle do here:

I would suggest buying an antique clock from a decent dealer. It should come freshly serviced and you will be getting a far higher quality clock that will last a long time and hold its value better than a modern one. It's useful to know how the friend feels about chimes before choosing, some people like them, others can't stand the noise!

Depending on the budget an Atmos makes a very nice mantel clock. Never needs winding.
