Does anyone here collect mechanical calculators ?

I don’t currently as such, but used to work on them as a job many, many years ago. I have always though I might start collecting a couple sometime though. Why are you asking?

Having seen the depressingly low value of calculators, I tried my luck on a couple of bidding sites without any luck. However I have a small advertising printing block of a calculator – probably not many around,  that I would like to re-home.

Yes, have about 30 of them. Did have 6 teleprinters but couldn’t get the person who said they wanted them to collect, so went down the scrappy. As you say, zero value, zero interest, not even worth taking to pieces for the bits, just look at how they made 4000 parts to make a calculator for the price.

The John Wolffe web site on Canberra University (I think) is the one to look at, takes a Madas and Marchant to pieces, amazing.

I bought a “new old stock” Kurta in about 1990 for £12 and sold it to a guy who had a collection of them for about £300 about 10 years ago. Amazing bit of mechanism but useless nowadays.  Bought from an office equipment supplier who was the UK agent, one of the last batch he imported the same time he imported his first batch of Casio electronic ones!
