Anyone else’s copy with the pages out of order?

Presumably to do with the print layout…

I've just had ME 4717 drop through the letterbox and I thought I was still pi$$ed from last night when I opened it- the pages are all jumbled up, in random order. Is anyone else's copy like this, or just mine?

        John.

Been a flurry of new threads reporting this problem that I've consolidated together. Apologies if I messed up and the posts are jumbled or lost!

The printing press and subsequent machinery to cut, fold, collate and staple the magazine would make an interesting article for MEW. Quite a process to behold, and all happening at a million miles an hour. When things go wrong, they can go really wrong! As has obviously happened. Some printer is about to get his derriere kicked.

I simply telephoned Mortons and a new complete copy is in the post.

Mine had merely many missing pages and hence was thinner.

Maybe you have to open the staples and collate the pages yourself, all pages seem to be there, much like playing the piano with all the notes but not in right order.

Perhaps it's a test to see how many Model Engineers can actually fix things!

                              My copy hasn't arrived yet.

Mine had the centre 10 pages transposed to the beginning and end of the magazine text proper, ie 5 pages at each end.

Fixed by using paper clips to hold the two transposed sections together, removing the old staples, putting things in order and re-stapling. Would have been easier I had a long reach stapler but one of mile flips out to 180° so I could drive them through into a drawing pad then flip over to hand bend the ends. Good enuf for government work.

If you are a subscriber to Model Engineer and have just received your latest issue you may find that the pages are miscollated. They are all there but not necessarily in the right order. This was caused by a printer error. The issue is currently being reprinted and subscribers should receive a replacement copy within the next few days.

Alternatively, in the spirit of one aspect of model engineering, you could consider the issue as a kit and rearrange the pages yourself!

We apologise for the inconvenience but be assured that we are 'on the case'.

Hi, yes mine came this morning, but I've been busy calibrating my A0 plotter after changing the carriage belt last week, and then finding out it needed a printhead replacement which I had to put in first. I may as well wait till a replacement ME comes, as my MEW 328 also came, which is all in order, so I can read that.

                                      Regards Nick.

Slightly off-topic, but I once bought an American car magazine and found some of the pages were missing. Returned it to the newsagent, who gave me the next copy off the shelf – that one was complete plus it had all the missing pages from the first. Actually surprised it doesn't happen more often with the speed that those printing presses run at.

Paper handling machinery does go very fast but unfortunately faster = bigger ballsup! I was shown a machine with lots of pipes and suckers to fold and assemble Invoices and statements then fold a flat envelope around them and seal it. That was about 50 years ago, when they had a typing pool to retype the buggered Invs and Statements. That machine was fast but probably slow compared with today's machinery.

I just took out the staples, shuffled the pages and put the staples back. It only took a few minutes. We are after all supposed to be engineers. To quote Forest Gump "shit happens". I'd ampily that, live with it.

My copy still hasn't arrived, but just in case it's faulty, I'm building a Magazine Re-assembler. Sixteen Arduinos programmed to manage a repurposed electric toaster. Very promising so far, only takes 11 hours to disassemble and incinerate a perfect magazine. Under budget too, £800 well-spent…

Maybe it would have been worth getting that long reach stapler for £5 last year even though I only thought I might find it handy.

By my standards 12 months from "Good price, I'll get one just in case I ever need one." is positively supersonic.

Longest wait from "handy buy" to "actually" so far is about 25 years. Some things still waiting in the cupboard after over 30!
