Still here, plugging away!

 

I wanted to share with you a number of model engineering groups which use facebook.

 

There are many more than this, and a vast number of tourist narrow gauges that anyone can find anywhere online if they want to.

 

But these are some of the more active/enthusiastic ones just FYI.

Hi Patrick

Still beavering away I see! I suspect the dead horse may be making an appearance again though.

My own opinion of Facebook is extremely negative – it may be an instant communication channel but I'm appalled by some of the stuff posted there. Instant and thoughtless comment and worse. ( Not, I expect, from the sites you quote though)

I did sign up in the early days and I've been trying to get away ever since. They keep trying to get me back with frequent emails .

No – not for me but maybe this will be of interest to others.

Hi Patrick,

I've just seen John S's commentary about negativity – so I will step carefully.

I am sure that there is part of the ME community that will use & embrace social media (Facebook/Twitter etc.) and enjoy it. However I suspect that there is also quite a large part of our community that never will do so (and for many varied reasons).

I spent the majority of my working life in the IT industry, so I'm not uncomfortable with technology in itself. Indeed I was on Facebook for a short while a few years ago as it was the only way I could view some family photos from Canada at that time. I have since tried to remove myself from the site but suspect that it's not really possible to remove oneself entirely. I won't bore you with the reasons I won't use these sites – I think its sufficient to say that I won't.

So my point is very simple. I hope we don't get to the stage where someone has to have a Facebook or Twitter 'profile' in order to access particular information or facilities on any of your websites, as this would certainly exclude myself (and I suspect many others) who do not wish to participate in any way in these invasive systems.

You can still view the content, pictures etc without joining. That is much better than most forums and yahoo groups. I only tried a couple so there may be hidden catches but at least it isn't one of those that demand you 'join' and have yet another ID & password to forget before you can see anything,

I don't understand why some are listed but don't have links.

Of course they are keen to suck you in as increased users means higher fees for the advertisers. That after all was the whole point of Yahoo groups but look what happened there after a while. Another insideous trap has been DynDNS which offered a free service to 4million users until recently when they started to make it inconvenient unless you cough up about £25.
