Can anyone help me with a diagram or instructions on how the valve linkage is assembled on the ME Aveling and Porter Steam Roller. I am drawing the Roller in 3D CAD as an exercise to improve my CAD skills. I have most of the model drawn but cannot find any details of the linkage. I have searched for a picture of the full size roller but cannot find one that shows this detail.

I have found that there are many mistakes and dimensions missing from the magazine articles but I have most of it together now.

The Lifting links fit to the hole in the top of teh expansion link at one end and come down either side of one of the lifting arms small ends, the lifting arm swings through the 8.00-10.00 o'clock arc shown in your sketch with it slarger end on a rod that passes through the bracket on the trunck guide. The Rocking lever also has its large end on this rod and swings through the 5.00-7.00 O'clock arc. If thats still mud I can sketch it out for you.

Not easy to see on photos as these engines had motion plates which tend to hide all the moving bits, have you seen this one on Station Road? Also a rare model so nor many photos about

I cannot offer any dimensions, but that curved link just "looks" too long to my eyes. Make sure it does not hit the top of the boiler when in the full forward (down) position.

We used to own the full size Aveling compound roller N° 14070 called "Billy Boy", sadly now converted to a showmans lookalike.

You are doing the right thing testing it in 3D CAD first, I have never come across a published design that is error free yet.

I gave up relying on other peoples drawings years ago, and now work exclusively to my own versions or designs done on Solidworks. That way I have only one person to blame if it doesn't work. My day job is a mechanical design engineer by the way.

Thank you for the information. I have seen those pictures. Are the 2 valve linkages connected together or or they separate.

I assumed there was a shaft linking them together but there is no ref to it in the articles.

Yes there is a shaft that goes through the bracket on the trunk guide, something like this. there will need to be some spacers so the kinks are far enough apart to miss the forked end of teh valve rods where they join the die block.
