Mazak castings

Mazak (Zamak) or monkey metal is used extensively in the auto and other industries to make small accurate castings, including spin casting into silicone moulds.

Does anyone know where I can buy a small quantity of Mazak (Zamak) ingots? I do not want to start with scrap material. I will probably make enough of that anyway.

I don't think they sell Mazak as such … but this is a very good place to look for an alternative:

Try Alec Tiranti, they supply the all sorts of moulding/casting supplies and while they do not appear to supply metal as such, they may know where to go. http://www.tiranti.co.uk

They used to advertise regularly in ME and I had to search back numbers to find them.

Andrew Tranti's do quite a few metals for casting try this section of their site but I think most are lead/tin alloys.

Hello John,

I am not sure that is the answer. Mazac (Zamak) is an alloy of Al, Cu, Mg, Pb, Cd, Sn, Fe,with a trace of Ni and Si. As an alloy, Zamac 2 melts at about 385 degrees C which can be reached electrically. So if I could find ingots of all the components, instead of a ingot of the Mazac, I would not be able to melt some of the elements and some i would not want to touch.

No, I will continue my search for some Mazac (Zamac) ingots. The problem seems to be that Zinc alloy casting is another skill that has been lost in Great Britain

I know you said you didn't want to go the scrap route but old diecast toy cars like Dinky and Matchbox were cast in Mazak.

These people sell ingots but whether they will supply small amounts is another thing, maybe they could point you in the right direction though.

This is not really true. There are die casting companies all over the place using both aluminium and zinc alloys. Do a Google search for "zinc die casting" in your area. You may well be able to scrounge some scrap castings.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Brockmetals have a minimum order quantity of 1000Kg. That should last a while!!!!

The Thompson Local Directory was delivered yesterday, so I will try to contact the local??? die casters. Fingers crossed.
