Any advice or contacts for companies that are happy to sell the small amounts of metal that a novice model engineer might need in the Yeovil / Somerset area?
      Thanks
      Bob..

They sell 12″ lengths of most types and sections of material. Min order is £15.00 but the postage is included.

modelmakingsupplies.co.uk sell budget packs of material or they sell 12″ or 24″ length’s of material.

I have used both and they both give fast delivery.

            Hi Bob,

I’m not sure about your area but there are quite a lot of online suppliers who specialise in ME supplies with reasonable postage charges. I usually find that these delivery costs are less than the cost of fuel needed to drive to my local suppliers. If you buy all you need for a project at the same time it can save on these costs.

Have a look at these for example (no personal interests just a satisfied customer ):
            Model fixings; (small screws etc)
Reeves 2000; (I find these a tad on the expensive side, but good range of stuff)

And there are many others, but these are ones I have dealt with and found good, especially MACC Models which has fair delivery costs.

And of course there are some bargains on eBay, it’s worth comparing prices!

Best regards and hope that you have a satisfying journey in the hobby,

            Terry

Try M-Machine, they have an extremely wide range of materials and sizes, far more, I would think, than any other supplier to the home workshop. Typically, I estimate, around 400 sizes of steel rectangular bar.
They also quote spec numbers, not just “bright mild steel” as some do, so you know what you are getting!

I’ve used GLR Distributors or more recently M-Machine , can happily recommend both.

I second M-Machine, they are my local suppliers (as local as anyone can be out here lol) they post small amounts and are close enough for me to go and collect larger orders.

I like M-Machine too. If you cannot find quite what you need in their catalogue it is often best to phone them and they will quote and take the order immediately.

Bob….I don’t know whether this will assist but when I started into this infernal hobby I used to buy in small amounts to complete a job…..and found that not only was I spending a lot in the postage and packing side of the business but I never seemed to accumulate any spare stock. I decided to “invest” about £100 on a load of budget packs from GLR…..about 30Kg in all which they delivered by courier for about £15. I now have a large reserve stock in a wide range of materials from which to select for the job in hand…….I wish that I had done this from the outset as it avoids a lot of frustration and hanging about waiting for stuff to be delivered. I am sure that GLR are not the only suppliers that offer budget packs but I have been happy with their service.

                            Good luck

                              Gentlemen,

I have one of the best material stockists I have ever found, unfortunately he retires in four months. Its a good friend of mine who manages a machine shop for a small engineering company. If I need something he wil see what they have, its all bar end scrap as their machines are CNC lathes but the materials vary depending on what they are making. In return I help with the occasional break down of their machinery, not the CNC, or any other little job I can perform.

Mallard metal packs (see ME classifieds) are reasonable too.

Try Milton Keynes Metals, they advertise in ME & MEW and will supply any size of any material, in my experience their prices beat hands down any of the other suppliers mentioned.
