      Hi all.

A little off topic but does anyone know a material which in its raw supplied state is around the 52 – 54 Rc mark ?

      Thanks in advance.

      Brian

Plenty of carbon, alloy and stainless steels can meet the requirement after hardening and tempering, but I'm not aware of any sold in a prehardened state. Those that are, like EN16T and EN24T aren't hard enough. There may be some ceramics that meet the requirements, but I haven't looked.

What form do you need the material in? Piano wire is only just below that and easily available in small diameters.

Any flame hardening steel will achieve this to some depth, or do you require a through hardened steel. In which case look at the tool steels used for mould making. If its commercial Carrs Steel over Birmingham way are very good at giving you a good selection so long as you can furnish them with correct answers to the questions.

Thanks guys for taking the time to repy.

It was something for work, i needed some 25mm thick plate, customer calls for it to be hardened to 52-54, just had something in the back of my mind that there was something available, otherwise i need to heat treat which risks bending the plates.

                  Not to worry, thanks anyway..

                    .

dont know … Just curious, Brian … Was my reference to 420 irrelevant to your requirement ?

Hi Brian what is it for and what sizes do you need. I have a few different steels

                      CMS 420 x 35mm dia. P20 x25mm dia. And D2 x 20mm dia.

If any are suitable let me know.

                      David

I have used TOOLOX 33 and 44, if I remember rightly that came in at around 420, was used for swaging dies in presses.

In the US we have AR500. It is an abrasion resisting plate with a Brinell hardness around 500. Nasty stuff to machine.
