How can I reproduce the black textured finish seen on micrometers, spirit levels, technical and scientific instruments, etc. as well as the boiler support of the little Merit/SEL steam engine shown?

I would call this black crackle finish but searching the internet under that description seems only to result in lacquers which produce an entirely different and unsuitable, although decorative, result.

          Hi Chris

Try searching for "wrinkle finish" paint. You might have more success as well if you look at car restoration suppliers, particulary those that deal with cars from before the 60's as that was often used as a dash panel finish.

Halfords do a reasonable wrinkle finish spray here. It does need a bit of practice to get it right but the results can be quite good. I have refurbished several items with the product and have had good results.

              Regards

              Terry

The knack with wrinkle paint is to gently warm the can and spray it straight on to clean metal. If you spray it onto existing paint or fresh primer, it's unlikely to work. Car Accesory shops are your best bet.

I have sucessfully renovated several micrometers using " Rust-Oleum " Aged Iron aerosol paint .This is widely available, just google Rust – Oleum aged iron for UK stockists.
